Trying out the crib

DD is 8 weeks and has been sleeping in a rock n play in our room. She will sleep in 4 hr. intervals so I have been happy. Twice now I have tried to put her in her crib swaddled after her last feed and she sleeps for about an hour. Then she wakes up fussing. Tonight I popped a binky in her mouth and she lasted about 5 more min. I didnt want to wake my husband and son who were close by so I put her in Rock and Play and she was fine. My concern is that the longer I wait to transition the harder, thats what happened with my son. I always think it must feel different bc they are so squished in and snuggly in the rock n play and the crib has nothing around them. I wish I could put pillows or blankets around her for that same feel(obviously I wouldnt). Any suggestions/words of encouragement/similarities?

I have never tried it but I have friends who put a rolled up sheet/towel/blanket under the sheet on the crib to create kind of a nest in the crib.

This is what I am doing in pack n play in our room

  • When we transitioned DS to his room/crib we started by putting him in the RnP in his room for a few nights first. That way he had something familiar (RnP) while he transitioned to being in a different space. We also found a crib wedge helpful when we did move him into the crib.

  • I'm working on transitioning LO also.in the hospital I noticed the rolled up receiving blankets and put them beside DS. We have done that twice for 2 naps and he has slept well in the crib. I also swaddle him too.

  • I agree with Lala.  Why borrow trouble?  If she's sleeping in the rock'n'play let her sleep.  DD transferred to her crib around 3 mos no problem.  DS was 7 months.  I tried before that and he wasn't ready.  When he was ready it was no big deal.

thats good to hear that your LO transferred no problem. Was DD swaddled when you transferred her?

This exactly. The first night was still rough but he was champ by the second night. Doing his 4-6 hour stretches like he was when he was in the bassinet.

Sorry just saw this.  We only swaddled DD for a couple weeks.  She wasn't a huge fan.  DS was swaddled until like 5 months or so.
  • My son is 12 weeks now. We transitioned him to his crib at around 8 weeks. I used that same wedge with rolled up receiving blankets under the sheets on either side of him. It simulated the rock n play the best. The first 2 nights were hard, but I think it was after the 3rd night he started sleeping all night. He was getting too long for the rock n play and once he moved to his crib I think it was more comfortable and he has more room.

No experience with the rock & play, but we are slowly transitioning LO from bassinet to crib. I started with putting him down for one nap a day in his crib, and he now takes most of his daytime naps in there. He is 8 weeks old and we have been doing this since week 6. He is, however, swaddled for all naps and nighttime sleep. I guess because of this, the crib isn't much of a difference to him. I would create a sort of "nest" like PPs have suggested, but remember, you can only do that until she starts rolling over. Best of wishes.
