Winter Coat/Suit for baby?

I see a lot of winter suits in the stores for babies. Do I need to get one for my LO when he's born or can I just use a blanket or one of those "shower cap" car seat covers? What's the best way to keep your LO warm?

Deja vu??

Re: Winter Coat/Suit for baby?

  • I don't see us being out and about in frigid temps, so we will depend on layers and blankets. We also got car seat covers for an extra layer.

  • Baby shouldn't wear a big coat or snow suit in a car seat. Get a shower cap style seat cover.

Only time you need a snow suit for baby is if you're going to be carrying him/her around outside sans carseat - like if you had an older child and you wanted to take both kids out in the snow/cold for a while.

  • No coat or snowsuit for baby while in the carseat!  Keep several warm blankets in the car and bundle them up with those or use the car seat cover.  Once they are over a year old, check these out, they are winter jackets that you can unzip when you put your child in the car so that they turn into a poncho/blanket and don't affect the safety of the seat (I just won one and am so excited!!!):

  • I would not buy one unless you are planning on spending some time outside.  Ski trips, zoo, walks in the stroller, festivals, sporting events, parades - that kind of thing.  We've always used one when the weather is about 10C or below.

  • Thanks everyone! I don't anticipate being out in the cold longer than to/from the car. That's one less thing I need to get! I think I will just get the showercap style cover and some warm blankets.

  • I inherited THREE fleecy zip suit thingies. I honestly doubt she'll use one more than a few times if we take walks as it "warms up" here. I registered for a shower cap for the carseat and I'm sort of excited about it!

  • I didn't think about the safety issues with the snowsuits in the carseat. I bought one from TCP a week or two ago that I'll be returning now!! I live in WI so it's ridiculously frigid especially during Jan/Feb. My sister gave me one of those zippy things so that should do.
