Car Seat

Do I have to go get the car seat inspected? or can I have them check it at the hospital before we leave with the baby? Just curious, because my boyfriend installed it and he's being a guy about it saying that he "did it correctly"

Re: Car Seat

  • We brought it to a local car seat check offered by the county. It was pretty helpful, they went through securing the baby and checking DH's work.

It's not required though, at least not in our state. Don't think our hospital checks, just required to leave with one in, but it's more about the high statistic that most car seats are improperly installed. Better safe than sorry

  • The car seat we have has the latch system and leveling "bubbles", so it's pretty fool proof and took me all of 30 seconds to install today. For peace of mind, you can take it to your local fire house for inspection.
  • Get it checked. The inspectors are certified because they have taken a course on car seat safety. Regardless of whether your boyfriend thinks he did it right your child's life is not worth his ego.
  • I would definitely take it in. Ours was pretty straightforward to install but we still learned a lot in the hour with the inspector. Highly recommend.

Also, stepping back, sounds a little silly to put a baby at any risk just to avoid hurt pride. Just saying.

  • I'd check to see if your hospital offers this service.  If it does, then no harm in waiting until you're there.  My hospital does not, so that's out for us...

  • We have no where in our town to get one checked but the hospital where I will deliver at (1 hr away) does check and makes sure the baby is correctly strapped in and even puts the baby in the car for you.
  • They made a big deal at our hospital tour that there would not be a check at the hospital and they handed out a list of places we could go. All of our local highway patrol offices do it so we'll probably go get it checked there.

My husband is one of those "read the whole manual" people, so it took him HOURS to put in the car seat. He read the manual it came with VERY carefully and then he read his car's owner's manual again. But we'll still get it checked.

    This.
  • I learned how and ive been at it 5 years so ill hopefully be doing it myself. My aunt bought my carseat but she still has it for now. The hospital will check it but not install it. If i have the baby before i get it in then ill have them check it. Not that i dont trust my aunt or anyone but i feel better if i do it myself.
  • Our hospital does NOT give advice on installation for insurance reasons. But they do have classes and people they recommend before hand.

However they do make sure the baby is properly secured in the car seat before they let you leave (they just won't check your car seat or base in vehicle. ) my mother is actually certified to inspect so we had her do it. It's really good to do because almost all vehicles are just slightly different in their recommendations. Make sure to bring the car seat manual and the car manual when you go.
  • We just had ours inspected last night and I'm glad we did.  My husband installed both bases and did it correctly in both cases, but we found out that with the seat in the base my husband couldn't fit behind the wheel of his car (he's really tall) so the base in his car had to be moved to behind the passengers seat.  We also found out that my car has problems with the latch system and should not be used.  So while we installed everything correctly we still had to make changes to insure the baby will be as safe as possible.

This also varies by hospital. When DS was born, they checked that he was in the car seat, but I tried to ask if he was in *correctly* (straps tight enough, etc) and they said they couldn't tell me anything about that for insurance reasons.
