Babies: 3 - 6 Months

how long did you swaddle for?

I am just thinking ahead for the average time parents stop swaddling LO's. I know every baby is different and some don't like to be swaddled at all. My dd is 2 mos. and I swaddle and eventually will move her to a sleep sack. Just wondering when most make that transition.

Re: how long did you swaddle for?

  • My baby is about to be 5 months old. She falls asleep much faster when she cant wave her arms around. I'm slowly trying to get her to sleep without being held down with a swaddle. I think it's all in your own time!

yes, I wonder about this. Once their not swaddled their arms are more likely to flail and wondering how this will impact sleep.

  • 6m and 2m.  DS outgrew it physically (I used the swaddlemes) and DD rolled over twice in 1 week while swaddled, so that ended that.

ooh I didnt even think of the rolling over part. So is that pretty much what signals when you should stop?

  • We stopped when LO rolled back to tummy- I think this was around 3 months.
  • I stopped at 3 mos. when my LO could roll. I put her in a Baby Merlin Magic Sleep Suit instead and she sleeps just as well.

This is exactly what we did as well. We swaddled until he started to roll over and then switched to the sleepsuit. We used Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep suit from 3 months to about 5 months when he outgrew it. After that we just laid him in his crib without any type of sleepsuit.

  • We stopped at about 8 weeks, just because it didn't seem like he needed it. He's 5 months now and sleeps in a fleece sleepsack.

  • I wanted to start the transition before rolling so we started at just shy of 3 months. We had been swaddling with a A&A blanket for her first few weeks, then using the swaddleme sleep sacks. To start the transition, I bought a Love to Dream sleep sack which gave some arm movement but still helped with the startle reflex. Now we use a sleepsack that swaddles around the waist and leaves her arms free. We are going in night 4 I think and it's been pretty good. A few MOTN wakes but I give her back her paci, turn on the susher and she's right back asleep.
  • My LO is almost 5 months. I swaddled until around 10-12 weeks, and have been using a swaddling sleep sack since then. She falls asleep much easier when her hands are immobile but she hasn't been staying asleep with them immobile lately so last night I switched her to a sleep sack where her arms are free. She slept for 6 hrs last night. Take direction from your LO, she'll let you know when she's done being swaddled.

I'm probably in the minority but DS really wasn't ever swaddled except for in the hospital.  We weren't ever able to get a tight enough swaddle that he wouldn't escape.

  • I stopped when he could roll over,  so about three months or so.  He managed to roll almost all the way on his stomach one night while swaddled and that freaked me out enough to stop. Haha

We haven't had problems with arms flailing and waking him up. He moves all over the place when he sleeps, though. It's so funny. But... he stays asleep so the sleep sack is fine for us.
