What are your plans? For those if you in Canada, what did you do since it's already past?

Re: Thanksgiving

  • We usually have several, they aren't all planned out totally yet but this is what I thin will happen.
Monday before dinner at my mom's. She cooks a turkey and a ham then the rest of us bring the sides.
Wednesday, dinner at my aunt's. My mom has 6 sisters so they'll all share in making the dinner. I'll probably bring sweet tea for everyone...
Thursday, eat at my house with DH's dad's side if the family and my dad if they are available.
    Friday shopping some
Saturday, eat with DH's mom's side at his aunt's. But not Turkey, a pork roast I think.(they think everyone will be tired of turkey by then, I'm never tired of turkey!

It's always a lot, Christmas is the same!
I like the timing of thanksgiving in Canada, seems like it would be a little more celebrated earlier and then we could decorate for Christmas earlier :)
  • We go to my parents early in the day usually from 1-5 and have dinner about 3. My sister and her family come and usually my uncle and cousin so we have about 13-14 people. My mom is an awesome cook. Then we go to DH's Parents house for dinner around 530-6 where there are 20-30 people. My mil is a horrible cook so I just sit at the table and occupy the kids lol. My parents and in laws live 2 mins from each other so we get to see both families at Thanksgiving. This year the Eagles play at 4:30, so I'm not sure how many people will actually be sitting down at the Thanksgiving table. I suspect most people will be glued to the TV since it's a 430 game!

  • I have no idea. Like I mentioned in TTT I would love to make a big dinner to start our own traditions but I know much of it will go to waste. The only people around that we know are my grandparents and my father and his family. I'm pretty sure they celebrate together and I feel like my dad would ruin the holiday for me so that won't work. Lol. Maybe I'll just make a smaller dinner. Idk.
  • We are in Canada, and each year we have dinner with both sides of the family... one on Saturday, one on Sunday.  DH's side is usually a huge gathering with tons of people focused on fun for the kids... where as my side is just my immediate family, lots of food, and alcoholic beverages.

This year we had a wedding on the Saturday so our dinners were on Sunday and Monday... way, way too much food and way too overwhelming. I'm kind of glad that Canadian Thanksgiving is so early, it gives us a bit of a gap to recover and do it all over again at Christmas! :)

  • @PumpkinMommaaa‌ defiantly do a small dinner if nothing else. Cook a turkey breast so it isn't so much and then do the traditional sides! Maybe you can do a different time with your family or do your dinner on another night so you can have the family over. I hope you get something worked out.
  • I have to work Thanksgiving and Christmas this year and will be gone from 6a-8:15p. So.. No turkey for me. My extended family on my mom's side always has a big potluck get together, so H will probably take LO to that for a little bit.

  • I think we are going to go to MILs new house this year. She will probably order dinner from Cracker Barrell. I will make some allergy free food for DS and me. DS and I will drive 5 hours to my mom's the weekend before but DH wants us to spend Thanksgiving with him.
  • Every year we go to my Great Aunt's which is a 12 hour drive for us. We leave Tuesday night, stop at my in-laws which is the half way point and then start early Wednesday morning to bake and such. Last year we didn't go because of DD being so young which was the first time in my life that I hadn't gone.

Anyway we have 30+ ppl for Thanksgiving but a lot of them are getting older. We have a traditional New England Thanksgiving with all the sides and desserts you could think of. We watch the parade and help with table setup. After the meal which is usually starts around 11:30am we watch football, do a family craft, relax, play games and eat leftovers for the rest of the day.

Because of the Blue Laws in my town stores are not allowed to open until midnight. It is kind of awesome. I have only done Black Friday once and it was great. Barely any line at Best Buy got there at 11:55pm and walked out with my big tv at around 12:15am. Then we sleep have a late brunch and start the journey home. We go to a soccer tournament for my husband to recruit at while I go to his aunts house to play with his younger cousins. Then Sunday morning we drive the rest of the way home. Almost a week long event but I wouldn't have it any other way.

  • My husband is Jewish and I'm Christian so part of our deal was that I could always have Christmas if his family can always have Thanksgiving.  They travel for both.

We go to Miami for Thanksgiving.  Sounds great but it's usually more work than it's worth and especially this year with LO.  I shouldn't complain, I know, but it just doesn't feel like a holiday without a home cooked meal and extended family around (we go out to eat obviously).  This is what his family always does though (because his mom and aunts don't get along) so I guess I have to deal.  The downside is that his grandma wants to see us before they go to Florida for the winter so we then have to turn around and make another trip to his hometown to see them.  If they could just do Thanksgiving with the whole family like normal people we could do all of this the same weekend!
