We have an iPad and my DD hasn't used it much. I hear about other children that have learned a lot from playing on the iPad. What are some recommendations for apps that are good for 18 month olds?
I don't think kids actually learn anything from apps, but my son did enjoy the PBS Kids app (mini-cartoons), Bubble Snap (touch the bubble wrap to make the bubbles snap), and Kids Doodle (colorful freehand drawing) before I decided to delete them because it crept me out how obsessed with my ipad he was becoming. Proceed at your own risk
I actually have quite a few on my phone for my little. We limit the amount he uses it but they DO come in handy when we're waiting at the doctor or for our food when we're out to eat. I've got: PBS Kids, Fisher Price Shapes & Colors, Fisher Price Puppy, Fisher Price Animals, Fisher Price Let's Count, Fisher Price Where's Puppy? Pink Fong Kid's Songs, and Disney Jr

"If you're still my small babe or you're all the way grown, my promise to you is you're never alone. You are my angel, my darling, my star...and my love will find you, wherever you are."
My LO loves all the Fisher Price ones too. But his personal favorite are the Peekaboo Barn and Peekaboo Wild games. Those things have taught him more animals than anything else. I was shocked. They use kid voices to name the animals and I think it encourages him to mimic them. The only problem is that he now thinks that's what my phone's sole purpose is.
I have an i-phone but there is a lot of overlap. Google--that helped us. We have Elmo Calls and some of the extra add-in calls. She has been able to do this one herself since about 12 months. We also have Cookie calls with no add-ins. We have Toddler Aquarium, which is kind of lame, but M loves it. I helped her with parts for a long time, but now, at 21 months, she can do it on her own. First 5 letters are free, and we did those forever, but she never got tired of it, so we bought the other letters. It probably helped her learn her letters and maybe some words. We have Alien Buddies, which she sometimes chooses, but is not her favorite. She can do this on her own, mostly, but required help until recently. It teaches colors, letters, and numbers, and is well-designed. We also have Busy Shapes, which feels smart. The problem is, it only took her a short amt of time to get through the first half, and the second half she can't figure out, so it is kind of a short play kind of thing. We have Baby Play Face, which I think is free. It probably helped her learn face parts--I know it taught her "cheek." We have several Fisher Price free apps, and they are fun. The best is Market. She needed help with the baking part at 18 months, but now can do it on her own.
I would use the iPad in a pinch... we let R look at peekaboo barn during a diaper change occasionally, and I know my in-laws have a story reading app. Just remember that your LO learns best from you!

DS uses the PBS app occasionally and an app for popping balloons where you just touch them and they pop. That's about all he can handle at this point. He just turned 2 last month but has been using those two apps for a couple months when we need to keep him distracted.
I wouldn't consider it a learning tool but I like to have to pull out at the doctor or places like that.
I agree that LO hasn't really learned anything from the ipad yet at this young age. But it is nice to have it as an option for a flight or in another setting where you need them quiet and distracted. That said, despite my efforts, LO is NOT interested in playing with the iPad yet, unless I am doing it with her. She does like the "I see ewe" animal sounds app, the Fisher Price apps (especially some giggle thing with a musical keyboard), and Toonia drawing app. Even with me helping her manipulate the apps so she doesn't get frustrated, we get 10 minutes tops before she drops it and is off to do something else.
My 15-month old loves it. And she repeats the names of the animals every time they come up. Not necessarily a learning tool, it might just prove she has a good memory, but it's my go-to app when I need a quick distraction.
I'm not going to argue that you SHOULD use it--M has definitely learned most of her words from reading and talking. But I also know she's learning when she uses the apps because she uses words and phrases from them and can use skills to win the games that she didn't have before such as identifying words that begin with a certain sound, etc. I certainly don't care--my focus is getting her to play and interact with other kids and have different experiences. But she loves the phone and it's fun watching her learn to read--her choice--while she plays.

My girl, 19 mo, also loves the peekaboo apps. She also likes the baby first app.
1st app I downloaded was Monkey Lunchbox, they were a bit young for it, but they enjoyed the interaction and pressing things, so it was good enough! And it's a great one to grow into. Plus everyone loves monkeys!
