GD Screening Appointment Time

Have you ladies (especially 2nd + time moms) noticed a difference in the pass rate of the 1 hour gestational diabetes test based on time of day the test I taken??

I just scheduled my appointment for the test for 6:20 in the evening a few weeks from now.  I'm suddenly a bit anxious about this test.  I know GD is not the end of the world but I would hate to take the one hour test and barely fail and then have to take the 3 hour test and continue to be even more anxious about this.  I was just reading on a blog that recommended taking the test in the morning b/c you will not have eaten as much so you're starting blood sugar level will be lower. Thoughts??

Re: GD Screening Appointment Time

  • My first pregnancy, it was at two or three in the afternoon and this time, it was at 10am. I had no problems either time.

  • My OB office just scheduled mine for early in the morning. At my office everyone takes a 2 hour. Weird, right?
  • @trin42 yes, 6:20 pm. My OBs office stays open til 7 every night of the week and the doctors take turns on "late nights". So obviously I'm going on my doctors late night.  I typically try to get the evening appointments so I don't have to take time off work.  So when she asked me about scheduling without thinking I picked the evening appointment. They were very clear that this was not a fasting test. But not that I'm researching I'm still concerned that if I have a full days meals in my belly it may impact my results. This is the 1 hour screening.

  • I've always taken them in the morning, but then again until now I've always been told to fast. This is my first time (in 10 pregnancies!) that I've been told that I don't have to fast. They said to just "avoid sugar" and not to eat for an hour ahead of time. I will probably eat only protein (no carbs, and definitely no sugar) for breakfast before the test. Also it helps if you stick to your "normal" diet in the days leading up to the test. My last pregnancy I scheduled the test for the day after Christmas...um, using self-control to stay somewhat normal while around all those treats was heartbreaking.

If you are really concerned, you could reschedule or you could see if you can come in and do the lab in the morning, then see the doctor that evening. Otherwise, just try to have either a "normal" day or a low-sugar, low-carb day. Protein helps stabilize your blood sugar, so don't skimp there any time.
  • The instructions for my test say to eat high protein, low carb meals before the test. I think you'll be ok if you plan your meals
  • I took mine first thing in the am with my 1st.  I have to schedule mine now but I'll probably try to do am again since the instructions say no food 2 hours prior to taking the test.
