TTC after 35

stupid person question, luteal phase consistency

You all have way more knowledge and experience with this kind of stuff which made me curious. From what I've read, although the length of the luteal phase can vary person to person, but it generally stays the same for any one person. Have you found this to be true? As in, is it always the same number of days between ovulation and AF showing up? Or, does it sometimes vary by a a couple days or more? Also, if you do see your temp drop before AF shows up, does the day it drops stay consistent as well? Last month was the first full month of temping so I have an idea of what my luteal phase length is, but I'm not sure if I should expect the same thing this time or not (don't want to get hopes up or anything crazy like that)

Re: stupid person question, luteal phase consistency

  • Mine is fairly consistent, between 11-13 days.  And for me when my temp drops I either start my period that day or the following day.  I have seen charts where the temp drop is a day or two after AF but that has never happened to me.

Yes, mine stays very similar at 14-15 days. I have had one odd lp length at 13 days Edit to add the 13 day lp cycle was the cycle after my chemical pregnancy so ?that affected my cycle.
  • I'm a newbie at this charting stuff too  - the first 2 cycles I made it to 14 DPO, this last one I only made it to 10DPO. I could probably be a weirdo in that respect though. wouldn't surprise me.
  • thanks ladies, you guys are awesome. here's to hoping my body acts like yours does!

LP generally stAy the same every cycle. I think most doctors like it to be at least 12 or more days long. I'm just short a day @11 :-/
  • When I was TTC the first time, my LP was consistently 13-14 days.  Since trying again, it was 11 days until I went on birth control.  This is my first cycle trying again and I'll be on progesterone, so who knows what will happen.  :)

  • My averages are 13-15 days, though I did have 2 cycles that were only 11 for some reason.

  • Love the above post. I am also an experienced charter almost 2 years and DEFINITELY do not read into it. Implantation dip is a myth I've had many drastic dips and never a BFP. My luteal phase is giving me slight worry as its between 9 and 13 days.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • @gscoville and @Radiantly, I completely understand what you're saying and I'm glad you pointed that out. I was actually just asking for curiosity's sake and to understand general trends.

  • I think this is very thoroughly answered by now, but on unmedicated cycles, mine is almost always 13 days.  It's never varied by more than one, except the weird cycle I had cysts.

  • *****lurking*****

I charted for about a year and my LP varied - anywhere from 8-12 days.  In fact, my cycle length in general was all over the map - 22-33 days total.  Because of the big LP variations, I never got in the habit of POAS thinking AF was late, because I really couldn't guess what "late" would be for me.  My temp drop also varied.  Typically my high temps would last for a several days and then I'd start to have a gradual drop for several days until AF showed up.  Hopefully, your cycles will be more regular and predictable than mine!  Best wishes!
