Could it be my milk?

So most of you know my son's weight gain issues.

Since his 6 month appointment he has been eating more real food. he eats toast for lunch, then toast with avocado for dinner. I noticed when he eats solids he doesn't spit up.

When I breastfeed him he almost always has some spit up. Sometimes he seems less interested or irritated at the breast. Is my milk the problem? Could this have been the problem all along (they never tested him for allergies or anything bc there wasn't blood in his stool). It's making me sad to think I have been feeding him for 7 months, something that was hurting him :(

Does this even make sense? Pity party for one over here.

  • Don't have any advice, but I'm sorry you've been struggling with this for so long! Very glad that your little one is doing well with solids. My (limited) understanding is that babies are just more likely to spit up milk than solid foods, but I don't really have any basis for that besides experience. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to get the milk tested?

Wish I could be more help. Sounds like you are working so hard to take care of your little one - he's lucky to have you!

  • It's possible that he's milk soy protein intolerant or something. But spitting up is normal so it's always hard to know when that's the main symptom.

My son has a dairy and soy sensitivity. He spits up a lot but he also gets a rash on his face/body and horrible diaper rash when I eat dairy/soy.  If you are worried that he may have a sensitivity, then you could try eliminating different foods from your diet.  The most common sensitivity I believe is dairy.  I eliminated that from my diet first and it took about three weeks to see a significant difference in my son.  Next, I eliminated soy.  That took about the same amount of time for him to clear completely.  Even though he's not rashy anymore, he still spits up frequently.

I'm not sure this helps but good luck!  You are a great mommy!

    ETA: clarity

  • Bc he also seems irritated at the boob and I can hear the gas bubbles in his tummy gurgling- and it's different with the solid food.

His weight gain, according to my home scale, seems to be improving as well.

Maybe I am just looking for a problem that isn't there...

  • Is it possible that he's not absorbing the nutrients from your milk?

I was wondering this as well.

I have a weight check next week and I am going to ask.

  • @celticlullaby I never thought of it that way...

I am hoping at this point my milk, for whatever reason, just didn't have high enough calories and no real damage was done.

  • Don't beat yourself up so much, lady. It's not your fault.

We have dealt with multiple food intolerances and are on very restricted diets. Before we got it figured out it was very clear there was a problem with a bad reaction to food. It wasn't just spit up, it was vomiting. Also dark green diarrhea, mucus and blood in the stool, rash on her bum, and eczema. If he wasn't having at least some of those symptoms then I'm sure he was handling your milk just fine!

I don't believe they do allergy testing at this young of an age typically. Plus, the milk/soy/etc intolerances babies have aren't actual allergies, so I don't know if they can really test for them at all?

I totally understand feeling guilty and blaming yourself, though. I did the same thing - feeling like I hadn't caught her food issues early enough. It's tough being a mama sometimes!

I'm glad your little guy is enjoying his solids and handling them well. Hopefully he gets a major growth spurt soon!
  • Yea I have been struggling the past few days- he has almost gained a pound in the last 5 weeks just by adding in solids.

The issue was my milk, and me, it had to be. Not to sound dramatic but when I allow myself to really think about it, I feel sick to my stomach to think he may have been suffering this whole time.

He just started cutting a tooth so I was planning to stop bfing soon anyways, but considered pumping. At this time I think it's in our best interest to go full on formula.

I feel so sad that he could have been gaining properly had I made a different decision. I hope this didn't cause permanent damage, I plan to discuss with my doctor next week.

Thanks so much everyone for your input and sweet comments. This has been a tough 5 months.

At Around 4-5 month, my nephew was really tiny. His parents were worried but when they called the dr, they always got brushed off. When they finally were able to bring him in, he wasn't gaining properly. They added solids and formula and he did fine. He's now a pretty solid, active 4 year old! I wouldn't worry about long term effects!
