Breastfeeding

Over supply 2nd time around?

I had an over supply with my DD and fought infections and bleeding and finally after 5 months had to quit pumping. (DD was a Preemie and never latched). I was able to use my frozen breast milk for 4 months and then switched to formula. My question is, if you have an over supply is it common to have one the second time around? I am dreading it as it was so painful for me.

IT'S A GIRL

Re: Over supply 2nd time around?

  • Nope. For a healthy female your BF experience the first time doesn't predict your 2nd time experience. It has more to do with the factors that promote breastfeeding success such as skin to skin immediately after birth and in the weeks following the birth, and doing frequent nursing. So much of what happens after birth and in the first 6 weeks determines your success so the fact that you had oversupply the first time should not have any bearing with your 2nd baby. My guess is that if you were an exclusive pumper that it made it difficult for you to regulate your supply.
