Sterilizing bottles

is it necessary to sterilize a bottle every time use it.

  • I hope I'm not doing something bad, but I'm sterilizing in the bag once a week. I wash the bottles at home, and wipe down the bottles for pumping at work with the medela quick clean wipes. But to be honest, I dont even clean bottles every time at home. I use a bottle, rinse it, stick it in the fridge, and reuse it a few hours later. :0/

  • Nope. We use the dishwasher. I only wash pump parts once a day when pumping at work - just store in a ziplock in a cooler bag between sessions. It might be different for a preemie.
This. From what we kept reading, you only really need to sterilize before the first use. We just stick them in the dishwasher now.

  • I thought sterilizing was not necessary except for before first use? I hand wash everything after use. Sterilize before first use.

I sterilize every thing in boiling water including pacifiers once a day. Use once repeat. But I'm a germ freak. I did it with my first also.

ETS: hand wash every thing before I sterilize
  • I'll tell ya what my pediatrician said. He's an old school doctor. He said we don't need to sterilize bottles.. Just put them in the dishwasher. I've been soaking/ hand washing them daily with hot soapy water and several times a week running them in the dishwasher.
  • I have two preemies (who are almost three months actual.. One month adjusted next week. Crazy) but we were told to sterilize once a day. I pump 8x a day and have four sets of pump parts. I use each set twice and throw everything in the dishwasher On "sterilize" at night at the end of my day. I use bottles once and wash and sterilize each day. It's a lot of work...

At risk of sounding dumb, Why do you put them in the fridge after rinsing?

Not dumb at all. Refrigeration slows the growth of bacteria.

  • I'm glad I read this! I've always sterilized pump parts and bottles using the bags at the end of every day. Maybe I'm being too cautious!
