Background: I'm 25 weeks along, and have been working part time since August for a great company. The work I do in my current position is all work from home, virtual work (download and upload the work files and have a 48 hour turn time, but no hourly requirements). I average 10 hours a week when it's busy, although it tends to be more along the lines of 15 hours one week and 5 (or none) the next. Very manageable, but the pay isn't great and the hours are fewer and less consistent than I would like. A new position opened up a few weeks ago that was more in line with what I wanted to do post-delivery. Significantly higher pay and a guaranteed minimum of 10 hours per week. For the most part, the style of work is the same (with a 72 hour turn time instead of 48) with the minor addition of a once a week or so phone conference with a client for 30-45 minutes. I pursued the job aggressively, under the impression that work would begin in mid March (I'm due mid Feb). The timeline changed right before I was hired, and I just received the offer letter, telling me that training starts in December (which is fine--great even!) and that we expect to have the project in full swing by early February, so we are requested to commit to working February and March without requesting weeks off. *gulp*.
I really want this position. It's a great start to a different career path for me, and the company has a great reputation for WAHMs. Clearly, I need to discuss this with my new boss. I have no idea what to expect, since this is my first baby, but my current plan is to work up until I go into labor (which almost everyone I know has done in the past) and then take one or two weeks off. My husband works from home, as well, my sister lives a few blocks away, and we are planning to hire a nanny to help with in-home care several hours a week so that I can get projects done. My only major fear is that I am being way too optimistic about recovery time. On the other hand, it's only ten hours a week, it's fairly flexible, and I'm not even going to have to get out of bed to do it.
