NWMR: anyone been to caverns?

We're going to Hershey in a few weeks for a breakfast with Santa.  We're going down the day before and I booked a hotel with an indoor pool, just a simple pool, not a water park or anything, because I figured it would be fun for the kids to get a chance to swim since in this weather we're not doing much of it.  I'm also thinking of taking them to Indian Echo Caverns, it's a cave not too far from there.  We'd still get in some pool time and I think it might be something cool and different for the to see.

They are 4 1/2 and 2 1/2.  I still push around a stroller and often it's only my 4 year old sitting in it because she's not a huge fan of walking.  There is a library across the street from their school, I no longer take my 2 year old because he does nothing but run around and pull things off the shelf.  Neither of them have ever been successful at story time because they lack the attention span.

It's a 45 minute tour of the cavern.  I'm starting to think we're not ready for this.  Has anyone else done anything similar with your children?  How'd it go?

Re: NWMR: anyone been to caverns?

  • I have been in similar caves and would not bring my 2 year old. Maybe my six year old.
  • Loading the player...
  • No. I would skip it. Depending on the cavern, it might not be very stroller friendly. Add in there is no way to exit quickly if they hate it or are disruptive...wait.
  • I would skip the caverns and maybe do Chocolate World instead.

  • I just did it with the kids the same age , although the caves were in bermuda. We did not realize how many steps there would be. DH carried ds down our two year old down. The kids did great and my 4 year old loved it. They did not turn the lights off until the end so we were not walking in darkness. We did two caves the same day each tour was 30 to 40 minutes. The oxygen, which we were not told about until the end, did not impact them but I had a few issues due to asthma. If Hershey is having their Christmas celebration I highly recommend the trolly ride Santa comes on and calls each child out by name, the park is great lights are great etc. We go there every year at Christmas.

  • I like the trolly idea, but it says it's 75 minutes.  Do you think they'll be interested?  I remember it being pretty historical.
  • My kids went on it last year and liked it. They sing songs and make it more interactive. Both my kids do well sitting in restaurants, plays etc. So it may depend on your children's personalities. Ds was only 18 months last year.
