What kids around the world eat for breakfast

I've been struggling with breakfast choices now that Sophia's coming up on one year (I mean...she's GOT to be sick of ground oatmeal cereal by now). On weekends I give her a waffle with raspberry jam, a pancake if I make them, etc. (this weekend, I plan to try eggs and breakfast sausage for the first time), but when it comes to DC I just send her with the cereal and a fruit and that's it. I need to expand my horizons.

Today was the perfect day to stumble upon this article. No, I'm not going to start giving her coffee and kimchi but I thought this was a super cool read (and will admit...I did get SOME good ideas from it):

Re: What kids around the world eat for breakfast

  • @Sing2Phins does your day care provide lunch for the kiddos? The one thing that's been a godsend is that Sophia can now have the day care lunches. It feels good to get more bang out of that tuition buck and shrink our grocery bill for a meal (and two snacks) a day. They give a menu in advance and everything. If that's an option at your place, maybe something to help your sanity and expand her horizons?

  • Thanks!

L won't touch oatmeal.  I was making "healthy" pancakes for her breakfast, but she's getting bored with that (she pushes them away now).  I'm down to bananas.  I was actually going to start a thread asking what people were doing for breakfasts :)
  • There are meals provided at DC, and some mornings when I see the menu, I want to stay for breakfast!!! When we had our tour (way back when) they were serving lunch which was a turkey sandwich on wheat bread with spinach salad!! YUM!

I still send Purees with, but they do offer the food that DC makes along with just to get him acquainted with it.

  • @lizb8943 Yes, they cut everything up really small and let them self-feed. I'm not crazy about the breakfast menu, it's very "bready" but the lunch and snack menu make up for it with a fruit or veggie at each of those.

  • I try to mix up breakfasts. Today was cottage cheese, banana and Cheerios. I do a scrambled egg in a coffee cup in the microwave- super easy. We just started trying smoothies, but she hasn't mastered the straw yet. I like doing different kinds of muffins on the weekend and it's an easy way to hide vegis, think sweet potatoes, carrots beets and zucchini.

  • @cagoldi‌ , I feel you, I grew up in Romania:) lots of eggs for breakfast.
We still do, but my LO throws up right after he eats an omlet, so I stopped giving him omlet for a while.
However, me make our own bread and for breakfast he has bread with turkey/chicken breast ham and cheese, followed by yogurt.
Or cottage cheese w hard boiled egg yolk+ dill.
    Banana pancake w cottage cheese.
    Toast with coconut spread.
  • Great thread and a great article.

Am I the only one not doing breakfast?
My pedi said it was ok to just do a bottle for breakfast since the mornings are so crazy, and B is not lacking nutrients or weight! So we just do lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner for food. (Plus 24 oz formula throughout the day)

I'm thinking I want to revamp our meal planning and schedule with the milk transition coming up anyways.

  • @trtlcrzy good find! I'll try these and let you know.
  • @Dapostrophe yes please! I'd be interested in those recipes.

    +1
  • @Sing2phins‌ that's exactly what we do. Obviously we weren't trying to wean since he's FF but I started taking him downstairs and putting him in his highchair with water or milk in a sippy and a couple mini muffins or mini omelettes while I got his medicines ready. He took to that fine and started dropping his morning bottle. He probably hasn't had one in a good 5 or 6 weeks. DC feeds him again but I don't want to send him off hungry or thirsty. Very painless, I can see that working well if you are trying to drop a nursing session.
  • @sunshin41‌ I haven't yet. If he gets muffins for breakfast, I mean real muffins in the traditional sense not the mini omelette muffins or something, he only gets one. He has it with Greek yogurt and a couple little pieces of cheese or some eggs. Something with a fair amount of protein to avoid or slow a rapid blood sugar spike. My dude is wild enough without being hopped up on sweets.

@tgrimes1980‌ @sunshin41‌ What kind of pan did you use? I have better luck with cast iron. Non stick is always terrible for pancakes IMO.
  • I didn't see yogurt in this discussion, but I don't consider oatmeal self feeding so I guess it's not out of the range of possible. My standbys are:

Yogurt with cut up fruit mixed in or old fashion adult oatmeal made with 1/2 milk, 1/2 water and apple sauce or cut up fresh apple pieces cooked in. Daycare or grandma serve it when she arrives. These are not self feeding, but they are crowd pleasers.
  • @tgrimes1980 Maybe you cast iron skillet needs to be seasoned?
