Cloth Diapering

cries with wet diaper excessively

So this is my 3rd kid, first to cloth diaper. He seems so sensitive to wet/dirty diapers. He cries like he's in pain. I know for certain that with cloth they are wet inside there and we have always been the type to be on top of diaper changes, disposable or not, but it seems extreme. We must go through 15-18 diapers a day even at 6 weeks. I have noticed he is still particularly sensitive even in the rare case he is in a disposable, so my thinking about putting him in a disposable to see if it makes him more comfy at night seems tenuous at best. Any thoughts, ideas, tips? Especially for nighttime, it would be nice for him to be calmer during the night especially surrounding diaper changes, or even if we could do a few less than every 90 minutes or so, so we could all get more rest. He doesn't have any rash or anything going on either that would be causing such extreme sensitivity. My other two didn't like a dirty/wet diaper either but they were manageable on the subject, I don't know if this is a cloth issue, baby issue or combo. Thanks ladies.

Re: cries with wet diaper excessively

  • What kind of diapers are you using? Have you tried anything that is stay dry like Bum Genius 4.0, that wicks the wetness away? Does he stop fussing as soon as a clean diaper is on?

  • We mainly use workhorses, prefolds and covers. I have a few fuzzi-buns, kawaiis and a blueberry simplex. He stops crying almost immediately after you take the wet diaper off, is a happy camper relaxed and chilling on the changing table as when a new, dry diaper is snapped on.

  • Do you notice any difference when he is in the fuzzibunz or kawaii? if so You could try cutting some microfleece liners so he will not feel the wet natural fibers against his skin.

  • Our cousins's little girl was like this with disposables. You're definitely not alone!

  • I agree with trying something that has a stay-dry top, like BG 4.0 (double stuff for nighttime) or cutting some fleece liners.

  • thanks for the words of support. No he seems easily as unhappy when wet in fleece or cotton. Perhaps it is just his fussy self and this too shall pass...

  • Chiming in late, but just wanted to let you know that you're not alone -- DS hated wet diapers too, didn't matter what he was wearing and we tried so many different things. He was actually worse with disposables. Only thing we could do was change him when he was wet. So we were in the 18-19 diapers per day club too.
  • Is there a chance that it's a urinary tract infection that's causing him pain when he pees?
