Preemie Milestones

Totally clueless FTM...and to a preemie none the less...

My little guy is 5 weeks old. His actual due date is in 3 days from now. I've heard of the corrected/adjusted age but not exactly sure how that works and am wondering how Mr. Grayson should be acting at this point.

He doesn't make eye contact & doesn't smile. There's no real interaction. Sometimes he'll look up at us but not focus on anything for more than a couple seconds.

He also didn't pass his hearing test in the hospital upon discharge (2 1/2 weeks old) so I have no idea if he can hear. TBH, I feel that he can, at least somewhat. On occasion, if he's sleeping and something loud happens suddenly, he'll flinch but more often than not he just sleeps right through most things.

Anyone had any experience with any of these things? I'm a worry wart and very stressed about his development but of course he's still little SO...I'm lost here...

Usually, they say milestones are projected for lo's actual due date and not their birth date. I wouldn't wirry, because drs follow the rule of due date to check for milestones. Sounds like your LO is just acting like a typical newborn. It might seem like a big difference now, but it won't be noticeable the older he gets. As for hearing, I believe they can do more tests to check his hearing, but, just because he didn't pass the first time, doesn't mean he can't pass another one now. I'm not a dr, but my guess is it may not have been as accurate because he was a little early and maybe he just needed a little more time to get there.

  • My little one was born three weeks early, and has hit some milestones on time and others behind. His pedi as said this is normal for babies born before their due date. Technically your baby isn't even born yet, so it makes sense if he isn't doing much. Talk to your pediatrician about it.

  • I have a micro preemie and as Nilvero said, he meets some milestones on time and others behind.  They (the developmental specialists and if you have a good pedi) will go by his due date, not his actual birth date.  So five weeks early, makes him not born yet, he's not going to do newborn activities until after he should be born.

Keep note that he was early, sometimes you have to remind your Pedi that he was early and that the milestones they are expecting are unreasonable.  (Mine gave me a questionaire for a six month old and mine is only 3 months old adjusted, I told them it was like giving a kindergartner a test meant for a fifth grader and to knock it off)  By reminding them, you won't get the shock of, ohh your LO is behind.
