Trouble TTC

Intro to this group now

I started out in the "Infertility" group and was referred here by some ladies thinking it might be a better fit. Here's my story:

25 yrs old, married 2.5 yrs, ttc since the beginning, never on birth control and can't do IVF-- I'm Catholic so I will be looking for support in alternatives such as NaPro and Catholic-approved methods.

If anyone can offer advice and ideas that would be wonderful!

So far I've tried clomid (didn't make me ovulate), femara (made me ovulate once or twice and then stopped working), and had a HSG which showed normal tubes. I have enlarged ovaries so "PCOS" apparently, but I'm thin and the overwhelmingly popular cry "loose some weight!" won't help :p

Next step for me will probably be ovarian wedge resection, which apparently has a 90% success rate and helps regulate hormones and cycles after the surgery. Has anyone had this and/or did it work?

  • Another thin PCOSer here. I'm glad you found us, even though none of us would CHOOSE to be here. I've never even heard of that surgery so I don't have any input on that. Always a good idea to talk diet and lifestyle changed with PCOS. It can't hurt.

  • Welcome. Sorry that clomid and femara were not working for you, I had similar responses and ended up needing injectible medications to make me ovulate. I will add to @BlueFairy5 recommendation about diet. I changed my diet for my last IUI (didn't lose much weight at that point) and I had my best response to injects overall.

I am by no means an expert on surgery, but from what I have read ovarian surgery (such as wedge resection and ovarian drilling) for PCOS is considered pretty outdated. I have not seen anyone on the board that has done this but maybe someone can speak up.

Is there a reason you cannot do injects?
I came here to say this.  If you're not responding to the oral medications it seems like the next logical step would be injectables.  I am also not very familiar with ovarian drilling - I don't think I've ever heard someone here mention it - so I'm far from an expert in this area, but I was under the impression that most doctors don't even perform that procedure any more.

    Welcome and good luck!

  • Welcome! First of all, I want to commend/encourage you for sticking to your beliefs even in the face of infertility. I hope and pray that you will find success very soon!

Although we're not Catholic, we are Christian and have ethical concerns about certain aspects of ART. It's going to be a careful, prayerful journey for us!

I suggest the injectable medications for ovarian stimulation, definitely before going through any surgery. Many women who do not respond to Clomid or Femara find that they do respond to injectable medications.

I also suggest considering/praying about/asking a trusted spiritual advisor about ways to do IUI that respect the Catholic teachings about sex. Many (though not all) Catholics believe that collecting the sample with a special condom during intercourse, then putting the sample in the wife's body with the purpose of reproduction, is acceptable.

  • Thanks for all the welcomes! I don't know about "injectables" and if they would work or not for me, so possibly that would help, and I could ask about that too!

What my gyno said about the ovarian wedge resection was that 50 yrs ago women were treated with wedge resection and ovarian drilling, and it was becoming popular and taking off, but then IVF was invented and research died down on the wedge resection and went towards IVF instead. So, yes, in a way it is probably an "older" method, but I wouldn't say outdated, because it seems to have a really high success rate, and can even regulate hormones so I could get my period without taking progesterone (which would be great...)!

I also think it could be a better way to treat my problem and not just the symptoms. I'd rather just fix my problem for the long-term. My goal is to have 5 children, so I really want to just make my body work as much as I possibly can.

There are other options I've thought about, like embryo adoption, which is controversial in the Church, but there has been no final declaration on whether or not it's immoral. That being said, birth control was not declared immoral right away, but then it was decided later, so that might happen with frozen embryos, in which case I'd better get going so I'm not at fault :p

But even that I believe has a really low success rate, and I do want to have my own offspring. I want my husband's and my genes passed down, not just someone else's! On the other hand, if the frozen embryo transfer did work, I would never have to tell anyone that my baby was adopted, as opposed to traditional adoption, which I'm totally not ready for at this point!

  • Welcome and I hope your stay with us is short! Another "thin" pcos, the injectibles are to stimulate your hormones instead of by pill like clomid/femara. Wishing you all the best
