Transitioning baby from boob to bed

Help! Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere but this exhausted mom doesn't have the brain power to search!

My DD and I are very slowly getting a hang of this breastfeeding thing. She nurses on one side and every single time passes out on my boob. I usually wake her up with a diaper change and offer the other side, which she always takes. Then passes out again. All fantastic. But the moment I move her off my chest and into whatever I want her to sleep the milk coma off in, she wakes up fussy and we start all over.

Is this because she isn't getting enough in one feeding? We sometimes repeat this 3-4 times until I finally give up the "transition" and just let her sleep on my chest. I was so exhausted tonight because I hadn't slept for more than 30 minute increments, which are rare, in so long that I had DH sit next to us and watch her while we both slept because I am so nervous she will smother herself in my chest. She slept like this for 3 hours and only woke up because I made her so we could repeat the process. Since she sleeps for so long on my chest I feel like she is getting enough milk...so how do I transition her to a safer sleep option?

  • We are struggling with that same issue.

  • I will have to give swaddling another try. She isn't a big fan. She likes to suck on her fist as a comfort tool, so she usually fights the swaddle until she breaks free.

What is everyone's preferred swaddle blanket?

  • We love the Ergo Baby swaddler as it is (so far) escape proof, you can keep their arms swaddled for diaper changes or to go in the swing if needed and it doesn't give them hip problems.  It's also cotton so it lets them regulate their body temperature. When my little one fusses like that I put her in the baby carrier and pick up the room for a few minutes.  The jiggling knocks her out and then I can put her into her crib with white noise and if she stirs, a pacifier. It is really annoying having to tidy when I am tired but it's nice in the morning lol!

  • We used to have this problem, I don't know if LO outgrew it or I became a more strategic transfer person. I change her diaper as soon as she wakes, at night I do reswaddle. I let her eat all she want off one boob and then burp her offer the other. The trick for us is to hold her until she is in a deep sleep and then transfer.

  • I also heat wherever I'm laying him down with a heating pad and then move it before putting him down. That way the spot is warm and the cold bee doesn't wake him up. Check to make sure the spot isn't too hot though obviously.

  • Like pp, I also allow LO to lay on my chest after feeding until I know for sure that she is asleep. She usually gets the hiccups if I lay her down to quickly and she wakes back up so this helps out with this problem as well. Try the swaddling if it works. We found out very quickly that out LO hates to be swaddled bc she can't move her arms around. She moves constantly, just like she did in the womb.
  • I also have to wait til she's in a deep sleep before the transfer - limp limbs is a clue for me anyway. Also I try to put her down in the same position (roughly) she was when she fell asleep. What I mean by that is that while she is always put down on her back to sleep, if it was the left side of head that was on the bed or against my chest or arm, then I try to make that side touching the bassinest mattress so that the tactile sensation is the same.

  • Do you swaddle? We have a similar process. When he wakes I unswaddle, feed on one side (usually falls asleep), diaper change, swaddle again, feed on other side (falls asleep again) and then put back in RNP. Sometimes he wakes a little during the transition but the swaddle keeps him cozy enough that he either stays asleep or falls asleep on his own once I lay him down. If I didn't swaddle him (like during the day for naps) he's way more likely to wake and fuss.

this is exactly what I do!
