How did/will you prepare for induction?

As many people as it seems have already been induced or will be induced, I've not noticed talk on how to prepare.

I just got my induction date for next week, and now I'm trying to figure out a plan.  How do you decide what the last meal you eat will be?  Should I eat red meat for a last minute iron boost?  Do you eat breakfast before a 6 am admission and just hope it stays down?  And, how on earth are you supposed to get restful sleep the night before?

At least if I went into labor on my own, I can make thoughtful decisions from that point on.  Instead, I feel like all the decisions I make for the next week are important.  Am I way overthinking this?  Maybe this is just be a freak out period I need to get over.

Re: How did/will you prepare for induction?

  • No personal experience, but did they say you could eat breakfast? SIL was induced a few weeks ago, they told her no food after midnight, induction started at 6:30am. Just something to double-check on.

  • I am being induced this friday!  YIKES!!!!! We go to the hospital the night before, I plan on eating a pretty good dinner, and then heading to the hospital.  All of our bags are packed and carseat in the car (although we may have to switch cars due to some car troubles today) but I think we are going to go about it like any other doctors visit (except expecting to come home with baby)  We have made arrangements for our dog and cat.  The only last minute thing we need to do is grab our phone chargers and we will be good to go.
  • @flutterbuggie‌ - That's what I thought too! She didn't get to eat until like 8pm that night! I felt really bad for her not getting any food all day.

  • I was induced on the 23rd. I was told to arrive at the hospital the night before for admission. Since my induction was decided a few hours prior, I didn't have time to plan out a big dinner. I had already planned on leftover homemade soup so I ate that. I arrived at the hospital around 8pm and was told I could eat until midnight. Thank God, because I was starving by 9pm. Luckily DH had some soft Philly pretzels packed.

After midnight I was only allowed ice chips.

After arrival a foley was inserted and I was told to get some rest. Easier said than done but I did manage to sneak in a few hours. If you aren't being admitted until 6am at least you'll have your own bed to sleep in the night before.
  • Thanks @abbyful @flutterbuggie @BridgetThoams and @MommaKb710

I do at least see my OB one more time before induction, so I'll definitely ask about food restrictions then.  The nurse who did the childbirth class made it sound like eat what you can before you arrive because nothing but clear liquids until after delivery.  My mom just told me it's better to throw up food than nothing.

I was induced with DS. I had to be there at 7 am and started pitocin around 9. I had no problem sleeping the night before, woke up early, showered, dried my hair (which made me feel better bc I knew I wouldn't shower for a while!), called the hospital to make sure they were ready for me and stopped for a bagel on the way to the hospital. I was surprisingly calm because I knew it would all be over soon.

The whole iron thing and what you should eat - don't overthink it but definitely have something in your stomach bc it could be a while!

  • I'm being admitted to start induction tonight at 7 PM. My OB said to eat like normal today and tonight, and then once they start the pitocin in the morning (if I need it), it's clear liquids after that until the baby is born.
