Cloth Diapering

Ready to prep

Okay, so I'm about ready to start prepping my newborn stash and wanted to ensure I do this correctly.

I have:
12 prefolds
20 Kawaii Green Babies (with 40 bamboo inserts)
3 Bumpkins pockets (with 3 inserts)
6 Covers

Should I wash everything together 5 times (except for the covers only once)? Or should I first wash just the prefolds and inserts and then add the Kawaii & Bumpkins pocket diapers for 4 washes? I have read that you don't want to wash the synthetic with the natural materials the first time so thought separating them might be the best option.

Also, I have an LG FL HE washer. Any special considerations for prepping with an HE washer?

Will warm wash/ cold rinse be best? And should I add soap for each wash or just the first one?

Lots of questions I know, I just don't want to screw it up.

Thanks so much for your help!

  • the prefolds, and maybe the bamboo inserst are all that you need to wash a lot. everything else only needs to be washed once.

  • Wash the prefolds and bamboo inserts together several times, then throw in the pockets/covers on the last wash. I used a hot wash. I used a little detergent for the first 2 washes, but not after that. You'll want to dry the prefolds and bamboo inserts in the dryer a couple of times as well.

No need to do anything special for prepping with an HE washer.

  • You can also prep your prefolds and your bamboo inserts in with your next few loads of whites, towels, and sheets, if you aren't in a rush.  The pockets and covers could go in with those once too.
