Fenugeek Short term?

I was sick last week and chalked up my lower supply due to ovulation, but now I think it tanked due to dehydration despite my best efforts to drink water like a fish. I'm still producing enough to feed little one, but I was on an oversupply before. I'm worried about it tanking more at some point and REALLY having to fight it. I've been drinking a ton of water, adding time to pumps during the day to get a second let down and I did an abbreviated power pump last night. If I take fenugeek to get it back up a little bit would I need to continue taking it or could I take it for a short time and discontinue when my supply increases?

I'm a FTM and supply to get me through a year has always been my biggest worry. Yup - I'm a worry wart.

  • I've taken it a few times over the last 11 months and never had to take it more than 2 weeks. I don't think it's a long term kind of thing.

  • Thanks ladies! I might get some and give it a try. I looked yesterday. It's kind of pricey that's why I was hoping to boost with pumping alone.

Trying not too worry too much :) Didn't know I'd get this much into BFing.

We're having a "friendsgiving" this weekend so maybe the turkey dinner will help. And I'm down to give some donuts a try ;)

  • agree that you shouldn't worry. it's normal for your supply to dip during/after illness. try to rest as much as you can, drink a ton of fluids, and eat healthily.

you could try fenugreek supplements or mother's milk tea, and some people also find that taking a calcium and magnesium supplement helps. also, here's a list of lactogenic foods.
  • I found a recipe for cookies I wanted to try - any idea where to get brewers yeast? I don't believe I have seen that in the baking aisle lol

  • whole foods would also have brewer's yeast.
  • I've tried Fenugreek in the past.  I took it for 2-3 days, then stopped when my supply bumped back up.  That seemed to work, but it's totally possible my supply was rebounding on its own as well.
  • I was afraid to stop taking fenugreek, thinking it was the only reason I had a good supply. I haven't taken in almost a month now and everything seems to be going well :-)

  • trader joe's doesn't have it. if you have another natural foods store around, i'd try that. otherwise, amazon.
  • Just lurking and wanted to say that I found fenugreek much cheaper online at pipingrock.com ( instead of GNC where I bought the first bottle) . Good luck!

  • I bought my fenugreek and Brewers yeast off Amazon- both are great and were reasonably priced. Just a warning with fenugreek- it makes you smell like Maple syrup. And I mean really smell- my Breast milk, when I pee, when I sweat- everything is MAPLE.
