5 lbs in 1month

Had a doctor appt today, gained 5lbs in 1 month. Doctor wasn't thrilled. I Admitted its the snickers and kit Kats I keep eating...and chips. Salty things wake me up at work... What healthy things help you all get through the day? By 10am and 3pm I'm looking for sugar and salt! I'm just so tired of nuts and hummus. Lately salad doesn't sit well with me either. I began off so well, now I'm going back to being bad. Ugh

That is a very, very normal gain. Most doctors and midwives adhere to the 1lb per week standard. I'm concerned that your doctor gave you a hard time about a normal gain, unless your overall gain is substantial.

  • He's holding me to 25lbs. Believes I had a long labor with my first because the baby was large for my frame and I gained about 50 lbs.  This time I started at 121 and gained 19 so far, so I'm at an even 140 at the moment. But I do acknowledge aside from apples... I've been giving into most cravings.
  • My doc wasn't thrilled with my weight gain at my last appt either. I am overweight to start and was supposed to aim for 20lbs total. At 29 weeks, I have already hit that mark (I hit it at 27weeks) so he and I decided that trying to maintain would be good at this point. For my height and weight, I can eat about 2200 cals a day to maintain- which has been plenty- if I am still hungry after that, I will make myself chocolate milk or savor a tbsp of peanut butter- its been about 5 days total (I don't count on weekends, but don't splurge either) and it's been fairly easy... except yesterday... and Halloween. I use myfitnesspal and it has been helping me so far. Good luck.

  • Thanks ladies, aside from that I had a great appointment! I just remember how uncomfortable I was the first time with my weight gain. IVe been trying to be better this time, but this last month I just kinda gave into whatever I wanted. Apples is my healthy snack for the day... My other snacks went from nuts, hummus and carrots etc. to Cheezits, chips, snickers and kit Kats.
  • I gained 8 lbs at the appointment before last, and my OB recommended trying to keep it around 3 per month. 5 does not seem crazy to me.

Healthy snacks - nuts, hummus, Baby Bell cheese or mozzarella cheese sticks, cottage cheese, oatmeal, yogurt. These aren't the healthiest but do have some nutrients that are good for the baby.
  • This is almost exactly me. Granted I'm a FTM, but my midwife hasn't said a peep about my weight and I was 122 and 141 right now. I feel like my gain is on track and definitely wouldn't be calorie counting. I just try to make sure I'm getting all the protein, calcium and vitamins I need and check the scale occasionally just to be safe. Couldn't hurt to try and make some healthy swaps thought if you're indulging a lot. I've been force feeding myself apples and spinach ha. Maybe make a list of all the "bad" snacks you're eating and try to replace a few with some low-fat dairy such as cottage cheese or a whole-grain cereal like mini-shredded wheat! Keeps me regular :\">

Wow...25 lbs and u started at 121 :/ I didn't see that before I posted my previous post. That seems really strange, disregard my last post, idk...
Yea. I started at 125, I eat healthy most days, exercise 6 days a week and I have gained 25 lbs at almost 31 weeks. My dr isn't concerned AT ALL. This dr sounds like a moron.

I started at 200- hence my "slow the fk down" from my doc. Lol. My last pregnancy though, I started at 125 and gained about 40 with no concern from the doc. @YaMrWhite‌, you are my fitness idol ;)

I think I was over 260 when I went in for my 11w appointment, and he said 'please don't gain anymore than 15 lbs, it'll be a bit of a risk with you being so heavy', but I also have elevated BP for the first little while, so I could see his concern.

Well, I lost 15-20 lbs, because I dipped down to 250 at one point (in the middle), and I haven't been gaining much more than 1-2 lbs per visit, lately. I just scraped back to 259.6 at my 27w appointment, so I guess that's..good??

I'm not really eating super healthy or super unhealthy, though my appetite did sort of take a dip, recently, so hey at least I'm not eating a ton right?
I'd get a second opinion, really, from another OB. You're super light, and 25 lbs in a 9 month period doesn't seem like a whole lot, especially if you aren't gaining a lot at once or have previous issues regarding BP/pre-e..

I am expected to gain only 15 to 25 lbs the entire pregnancy. I was surprised that my OB didn't say anything when I went in last week since I've already gained 25 and have a ways to go still. Either way, the post was asking about healthy pick-me-up snack ideas not about the OBs professional opinion.
  • Going into this my BMI was on the lower side of normal. I'm up 26 lbs at 29 weeks. I gained 6 pounds in two weeks and my mw said it's completely normal to gain a larger amount of weight in a short time at this point in pregnancy. Baby is in the 46th percentile, passed my GD test, BP is normal, etc. I was very active up until this point (thanks spd) and eat quite healthy. I wouldn't sweat it.
  • Cold fruit or veggies help me. Pretty much anything cold. Even ice water. It sparks your metabolism and helps wake you up. Moving around also helps. Not sure if you'd be able to, but a quick walk or stretch may help too.

I think if you don't feel like you're eating well, that's a separate issue and you need to address that apart from this. I agree with PP, schedule a treat or two into your day (for example, I have ice cream every day after dinner). Otherwise, choose healthier snacks, like a piece of fruit, some almonds, a handful of baby carrots, etc.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but your doctor sounds like both an idiot and an asshole. You're right on track for where you should be, weight wise, and in your weight group (though I don't know your height) a 25-35 pound gain would be normal and healthy.

Lastly, DO NOT DIET. Your baby needs all your nutrients and will take them from your own stores (bones, muscles, etc) if you aren't giving them what they need. That's the last thing you want.
I can't stand when people say this!!!! Everyone is on a diet! It may be a diet of high fat low on other nutrients, but it's still a diet. There's no reason for a healthy pregnant woman to not alter her diet to be a little healthier especially if they know they aren't eating well. Yes the baby needs all the nutrients and an easy way for most to get the baby (and mommy-to-be) what it needs is to change their diet.
  • I hit 220lbs at my last OB appointment and broke down crying (I started at 208lbs). My OB to her credit calmed me down then proceeded to lecture me about being to hard on myself. She's not one to be super strict about the numbers though which is good for me but she does make sure I'm eating healthy and getting my exercise.

I know a lot of doctors are much more strict about the weight gain numbers and from the sounds of things yours falls in that category. To me 5lbs in a month at this stage isn't unreasonable and if you are worried about the docs reaction I would recommend bringing it up with them. It may be that the doc is more concerned about what you are eating (and kudos for being frank about giving in to cravings!) versus the actual numbers if that makes sense.

  • I had an 8lb weight gain last month. I was worried, and the my doctor told me that it was perfectly fine. She said there should be 2 big spurts of weight gain and this was my first. Everyone is different and will gain whatever they gain. It seems weird to be concerned about 5lbs.

I gained 10lbs in 5 weeks at my last appointment. Before that I was gaining about 1/2 to 1 pound per week. My midwife said it's totally normal to see a larger jump on the scale from time to time.

My go to snacks snacks are usually baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, sliced bell peppers, apple, orange, banana, rasins, pomegranete seeds, a yogurt, snack size bag of popcorn or some goldfish crackers.

FWIW I also gained a large amount of weight with my first(60lbs) and had a long hard labor as well. I totally get how hard it is to not freak about the number on the scale. Try to ignore the number and focus on giving your baby and yourself lots of nutrients. Focus on your health instead of your weight and it should all fall into place.

ETA: Don't forget to drink lots of water. I sometimes mistake thirst for hunger. So if I've been eating a lot one day I'll take a break, drink a glass of water and if I'm still hungry 15-20 min later then I'll eat a snack.

  • This thread turned mildly entertaining.

OP, I would also try to up the amount of protein you get in your meals. That'll help you to stay full longer. PPs have offered a lot of good ideas for snacks and whatnot. I understand getting tired of nuts and hummus. I definitely second what other people said about cheese. I wouldn't worry too much about going low-fat, since certain fats are good for you. A lot of times, I'll pair together cheese and an apple or Greek yogurt and fruit or veggies. That helps me to stay full longer.

Also, I think your weight gain is fine. Don't know what your doctor's deal is.

  • Is it that you find yourself snacking because you feel hungry or because of a craving? I know high protein snacks like Greek yogurt have been my best defense regarding the always hungry monster. At work I have been taking bags of carrots when I just eat out of boredom/need something crunchy. I have avoided having junk food around, but make trips to the corner store on occasion when I NEED something. Rice cakes offer sweet and salty flavors too.
Of for a 5 pound jump I wouldn't worry too much! Maybe try cutting the snacks, even by just half this month and see where you end up! And add a ten min walk in daily if yiuvarent exercising "or some activity you enjoy if you are cleared for it"
Our little ones had a rapid jump in size these past few weeks, so maybe you didn't gain all five, :) blame the chunker in your belly :)
