WWWMD: travel next week (updated)

DH travels occasionally for his job. Usually this is nbd because I have a very flexible workplace and I just shift my hours so I can do dropoff and pickup.

Often there is not much notice that he'll be away. For instance, he just emailed me to say he needs to go out of town Sunday night or Monday morning and will be back Wednesday. Well I have a big presentation to give after work next Wednesday at a city town hall event. Can't get out of it. Wouldn't want to anyway.

DD attends full time daycare and needs to be picked up at the exact time my presentation starts. We have no family in town and our regular babysitter went back to college in August. Two other attempts at getting a new regular babysitter have resulted in (1) a no-show and (2) a last minute cancellation. So we don't have anyone right now.

I've told DH to see if he can get back Weds in time to pick up DD. (His trip is only 3ish hrs away) if that fails, what would you do about daycare pickup/ dinner coverage?

UPDATE: DH is going to leave earlier on Sunday so he can start work Sunday eve, then travel back Wednesday morning. Should be back with a couple hours to spare before pickup time. Phew!

Thank you so much for all the ideas though. I will ask some of her daycare teachers and post in our neighborhood FB group. It would be nice to be able to go on a day every now and then!

  • Any chance one of the daycare staff would "pick her up" and take her to your house or his/her own house and babysit until you or your DH are finished? Our first daycare had several folks who would do that to earn some extra cash. We just had to make sure we added them to the "approved to pick up" list. Another idea might be to swap babysitting with a neighbor. They watch your DD and in exchange you watch their kid(s) another time.

  • Could you make an arrangement with one of the caregivers at daycare or another daycare mom? What's the latest you would be done? Couple of hours? Install a car-seat in their car and have them take DD. The caregivers may want to make a little extra cash. Talk to the director - I'm sure she has faced situations like this and may have an idea.

  • Is there someone affiliated with your presentation that would watch DD in the lobby while you present or has a teenager who would babysit/take her eat dinner/play/something while you present? (ie pick her up early and get down there and get her squared away). My kids LOVE to spend time with older, trusted kids and it's not a typical "babysitter" situation. So you might be able to score someone connected to the activity....

  • I would try and go the day care route if at all possible. See if you can hire one of her teachers or another teacher to sit for you that evening.

  • We have had great luck hiring people from our daycare. Ditto the others I'd try there and any friends.

  • Our teachers are allowed to babysit outside of school (some schools don't allow it).  There are a few that love the opportunity to earn some extra cash.
  • Do you have any good friends you could ask to help out?
