No anatomy scan??

Anyone else's doctor recommend not having the anatomy scan??? I had an appt. yesterday and at the end he said he'll see me back in a month (ill be 20-21 weeks at my next appt.). I asked him if that will be when we schedule our anatomy scan and he said it's up to me but from a medical stand point there's no reason behind it. It can cause anxiety over nothing and there's nothing beneficial from having multiple screenings. I already didn't do the 13 week scan because he said basically the same thing. All I've had is my dating ultrasound and another when I spotted. Am I being unreasonable that I want to have the anatomy scan done? I mainly dont want to spend $100+ for a 10min elective gender scan when my insurance covers this anatomy scan!

Re: No anatomy scan??

  • You aren't being unreasonable that you want one, but just to put it in perspective, many people go their whole pregnancies with no ultrasounds (some think it is a more natural way of doing things). And also, I'm pretty sure back 30 or so years ago, no ultrasounds was the norm.

I'm just trying to assuage any fears you have of not having one, but I absolutely think you have the right to one if you want it. I would insist on one if my doctor didn't automatically schedule one, but mainly I just love seeing the baby. And it can give you peace of mind if you need it.

  • I know that some women have mentioned anatomy scans that have indicated a problem that later resolved itself. I could see how that may cause anxiety, however if not having one is causing anxiety then perhaps you would be better to get it done. At least you are aware of potential problems and can go from there. I would push doctor to schedule it, you should have to cover the cost.
  • Especially if he said it's up to you. Just make him schedule one if you want it!

  • DEFINITELY if you want one, have one! Your insurance will cover because it is fairly standard, (though call to check if you're not sure.)
Your doctor's job is to make you feel comfortable with this process, among other things.

  • Some women refuse any and all ultrasounds but they usually only deal with a midwife. If you want it, you need to get it. I never would have felt comfortable skipping it.

  • He ment what he said. My doctor office where I get my prenatal care, schedules ultrasounds with radiology and then the doctor office provides you with a reminder slip that day. At my next appt. I am bringing my SO and we are going to tell him together that we want the scan. It just makes me second guess myself when someone counters my plans with their own reasonings why I shouldn't do something. /:

  • I wouldn't wait until your next appt to schedule it. They're usually done around 18 to 20 weeks. Just call him up and ask to schedule it now!

  • Your OB sounds like he really giving you the option. So I would choose to have the A/S done. If it's covered by your insurance why not.
  • If you want one done it is your right to have it done.  You're absolutely right, you shouldn't have to pay out of pocket for an elective scan when you can have one done that is covered by insurance.  Plus side to finding out the sex, they'll also check the make sure all of LO's vital organs are developing and working efficiently.

I'm not sure why he thinks there is no medical point behind it?  I just had mine done yesterday and discovered that my fluid is already a little low, but all his vital organs are working properly.  Now we have a plan in place to try to help raise my fluid levels, and a follow up ultrasound as well to check progress.

I would insist on the ultrasound if you want it, your body, your baby.  Do what makes YOU comfortable!

  • If you want to have an anatomy scan, then your OB should be giving you an anatomy scan. If there were no medical point behind having an a/s then why are the rest of us all having one? I think checking vital organs, growth and measurement, as well as your placenta & uterus is pretty important. I think you need to call back to your OB's office and sort this out. Otherwise,  I think I'd be seeking out a new OB.

  • Call and schedule an anatomy scan. Sounds like you want one so do it. Don't wait till your next appointment. I'd really love to know why this doctor thinks "from a medical standpoint there's no reason behind it".
  • Just call your doctor and tell him you want it. Remember, you need to advocate for yourself and your LO. Now is not the time to be shy. I work with doctors and while many may appear to be set in their ways and opinions, none would withhold a standard procedure IF the patient requested it.
  • I would not be comfortable not having an anatomy scan.  Yes, there can be soft markers for things that may cause unnecessary worry.  However, what if something was wrong?  At least you'd have time to get your resources lined up, whether that be a support system or extra medical professionals for the delivery.  I would call their office back and get something set up or switch practices.
  • I personally would definitely want one, especially if your insurance covers it.

In your doctor's defense he said it was up to you, so if you want one I'd call today and get it scheduled. However, I do think there is merit to doing one. They check to make sure baby is growing, all the organs, and where the placenta is etc.

  • Ditto above. Call now. There are things they could find that just need some observation and possibly treatment at a later time. If the technology is there, safe, and could help identify a potential issue, why not use it?!

If you want one, don;t wait to schedule! I just left my 16w appointment and scheduled my A/S on my way out.  Just call up there and say you want to schedule one.

Same here. And my dr was shocked I hadn't scheduled it already. Schedule it ASAP if you want it !

  • I'm not getting one because I'm worried something is wrong - I'm getting one because I want to see my little one as often as possible!!! That's why I did the NT scan too. It does help to reassure you that everything is progressing as it should be, too. So of course it isn't necessary. Women have been doing this for thousands of years prior to ultrasound technology, but it doesn't hurt anything to have an ultrasound, and they're a whole lot of fun!!!
  • My midwife said something similar to what your ob said. She also said that almost all her patients opt to get one anyway. I highly doubt your request for an a/s will be seen as unusual!

  • Per the ACOG:

How many ultrasound exams will I have during my pregnancy?

You may have at least one standard exam during your pregnancy. This ultrasound exam usually is performed at about 16–20 weeks of pregnancy. Some women may have an ultrasound exam in the first trimester of pregnancy. If a problem occurs during pregnancy, such as bleeding or pelvic pain, ultrasound may be used to help find the cause.
