Anyone else facing early induction?

I had an unexpected doctor's appointment last week because my heart had been racing for several days. Even at resting, my pulse would be 100+. My BP was fine, my oxygen output was fine, so my doc isn't worried yet. But, because of that, the fact that I had a high BP reading around 24 weeks and I have GD (taking 1.25 mg glyburide), my doctor said she wanted to go ahead and talk induction dates.

She said for her GD patients who are on medication or insulin, she doesn't like to push it past 38 weeks if she doesn't have to so as to decrease risks of stillbirth or other complications. So, as long as baby girl is showing healthy progress at our twice weekly NST/BPPs that start next week, we will be induced the week of Christmas (original EDD was 1/6).

Is anyone else in talks for an early induction? At first, I was excited, because it meant we would meet her earlier. But the more I read about it, the more scared I get. But I trust that my doc will cancel the plans if baby doesn't look ready yet. I know I can't control the birth, but I had really hoped to avoid a C-Section, and I know induction increases the likelihood of that.

Any others in a similar boat? Any past experiences?

  • I will be induced at 38-39 weeks depending on how the days fall by choice. I don't believe in the the baby is only ready to come when it comes. I have two healthy kids whom I was also induced a week early with.

I have GD too, and a history of Pre-e (my last child, not this one). They said around 39 weeks for me, but we'll see how things progress. I've been induced before though, so I know how this goes. I'm not due until 1/25 though.

ETA: Everyone's body reacts different to inductions, and yes you may end up in a c-sec. But I've had some harder inductions that ended up with all vaginal births, including my first child. With my last child, they induced her at 37 weeks because of pre-e. Several hours after they broke my water, I wasn't making enough progress. I asked for an epidural, and it was a good thing I did because it helped my cervix relax and dilate. I did not know this at the time, but the OB was talking about taking me for a c-sec soon. I just missed it. So, with an induction my best advice would be not to be afraid of getting the epi. It can help, though again everyone's body is different.

I was induce at 38 weeks with my son due to high blood pressure, and I couldn't agree more with the epidural. I was all for not having painkillers but you just never know how your body will react to prolonged pitocin.

My best advice is to take a flexible approach with your birth plan.

I'm in the same boat as MusicFanatic - but we are taking it day by day at the moment. Every morning I have a blood draw at 4am and I can't eat until the high risk docs have analyzed my results and decided whether or not I will be having a c-section for the day. The goal is to make it to 34 weeks - which would be the first week in December, but I don't know if that's going to happen!
  • Also in the same boat as MusicFanatic.  I am due 1/8 and my doctor has me scheduled for a C-Section at 37 weeks on 12/18 right now due to Pregnancy Induced Hypertension.  If I can go longer I will be the are expecting it only to get worse the next 6 weeks.  I have to C-Section due to my Crohns disease issues. :-(  I am less stressed now then I was when I first found out.  Both my maternal fetal and my OBGYN will know when the right time is.  Like Music said at some point it is more dangerous inside then out.

  • I was induced at 37 weeks with my first because I had pre-eclampsia. While I was scared of an induction resulting in a c-section, my doctor was great. She knew that I felt strongly about it, and she induced me over a two day period to try to avoid it. My labor was long, and I pushed for two full hours, but I got my vaginal birth! Yes, an induction does raise your risk of a c-section, but it definitely doesn't automatically mean a c-section. Talk to your doctor about your concerns, and he/she should be willing to work with you to personally reduce your risk of c-section as much as possible.
All that being said, a c-section isn't the end of the world, and getting that baby out healthy is most definitely the most important thing!
  • Type 1 diabetic so I've known from day one that I'm likely to be induced somewhere around 38/39 weeks. Haven't had the actually conversation with my OB yet but I'm pulling to hold out for 39 weeks.

Induction with diabetes is standard practice because the risks of induction are far less then potential problems if left to our own devices. As others have said yes it does increase your chances of ending up with a c-section but I've heard just as many stories of quick and easy vaginal deliveries from induction.

I would sit down and have a good conversation with your OB about your worries. I've had my list of questions ready for when the time comes (I'm guessing next week will be that time).

  • I have gestational hypertension just like I did with my last pregnancy. Last time I was induced at 38 weeks due to my bp shooting up to 180/112. I'll most likely be induced early again. My body hates pregnancy :/

  • I was induced at 38 weeks w/ #2 and went from pre-ecclampsia to ecclampsia.  It was very scary.  Even though I had pre-e w/ #1, they let me go two weeks over my EDD before they induced.  I was induced 4 days after my EDD w/ #3 due to borderline BP and they were all delivered vaginally.  The pitocin took 13 hours the first time, 11 the second and 5 the third.

  • Try not to worry about what "type" of birth you will have - A C-Section is not the end of the world. I was induced at 39 weeks with my daugher because I suddenly developed  pregnancy induced hypertension and they worried about pre-eclampsia. I wound up having a vaginal birth, but I was so worried about the C-Section. I dont want to scare anyone because my situation was is very rare, I had an amniotic embolism and fluid leaked to my lungs, I was in ICU for days on a ventilator in a induced coma to have the fluid drained from my lungs. I never imagined something like that would hapen and now, I feel like a C-Section would be quite welcome for this birth.  I WOULD like to avoid being induced this time though!

  • I'll have a RCS at 39 weeks but since I had pre-e last time they'll do it earlier if my BP starts to go wonky. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen but the closer I get to the end the more my OB says it will be at 39 weeks "if he (the baby) waits that long".

  • Thank you for all of your stories! Getting her here healthy is the most important thing, but I can't help but be a little scared. I have an appointment tomorrow with my doc and plan to ask her about starting the induction process the night before our scheduled date, to give me some more time to try to let things progress. As long as the baby isn't in distress, I hope she'll let me labor longer before we start talking c-section (if we even get to that point).
  • I was induced the first time around at 39 weeks due to GD.  The risks outweighed the benefits at that point.  I understand, and it's totally normal to be scared.  But if it helps, I had a dream induction.  Went in the night before for cervadil, started pitocin the following morning and he was here 12 hours later after 11 minutes of pushing.  Good luck.  And exactly as you said, getting her here healthy is the most important thing.  Just try to concentrate on that.  The rest will fall into place.

  • I was induced with both of my previous boys around 42 weeks.  Apparently my kids don't want to come out.  I am resigned to the idea of another induction.  The c section risk is scary.  Major abdominal surgery is a scary idea.  But if I am being honest with myself, I think childbirth is a little scary in general.  Yes, it is natural, yes, my body is meant to do it, but, it is a big event in our lives, and the consequences last the rest of our lives.

For the record,I am afraid of airplanes too, and I used to fly a lot for work.  I am a bit, just a bit, mind you, of an A type personality, and letting go of control is hard for me.  With my second kiddo, and with this one, I have been doing yoga.  It helps give me the thought that I can control my breathing, and partially my feelings of preparation.  Maybe something like that would help you?

Echoing talk to your Dr though.
  • I'll probably be induced at week 39 due to my SUA (umbilical cord abnormality). I'm a bit scared for the contractions but as PPs said, it's whatever is healthiest for the baby and I
