Nursing Bras and Underwire

so I went to a breastfeeding class this weekend and she gave a lot of great advice. However when she got to the bras part she made it just seem so easy to find a great bra. I have my doubts. Right now I'm at about 34 H I think, and I have never had luck getting to fit those bras that come in small, medium, large... Then she was saying how you never want to wear an underwire as it could hinder your milk supply. Since I'm a FTM and I don't know what breastfeeding will be like does any one have advice on this? Can you really not wear underwire? I can't even remember the last bra I had without it, exception is a sports bra. I've started to look at Amazon and Nordstroms to get ideas on bras that could work but I need support when I go back to work, it's one thing to just hanging out at home in a less supportive bra but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that at work. Any suggestions on really good nursing bras?

Sorry I know this has been asked a lot but I couldn't find the threads on my phone very easily.

Re: Nursing Bras and Underwire

  • You should try figleaves.com, that's where I get mine and I'm a 38h. Underwire should not be worn, especially for first timers. At least until your supply is really established, and I mean REALLY established like 6+ months. I didn't wear underwire with my first at all. My third child, I didn't want to spend the money on new nursing bras and my regular ones were kind of loose so I just wore my regular bras with underwire. I'll probably buy a couple nursing bras this time again, without underwire. The technology has gotten better, though still not perfect. I hope that helps

  • I've got huge boobs and have never founda good 'supportive' nursing bra. This time I'm going to invest in an Anita bra and see how that works out.

I've been told under wire is a no no, but I've never had an issue with it affecting my supply. Not to say it doesn't for some women though.

I wish it was just that easy to go to the store and try on a bra that will work. Big boobs suck sometimes!

  • 38 F here. When I went to check out nursing bras I found that some have underwire and some don't. The part that amazed me was the ones over an H cup didn't have any underwire.

I'm a FTM so I can't speak from experience but I know that it is said underwire can effect your supply. That being said of my friends with kids those a that did continue to wear underwire have said they had no issues but all those ladies had plenty of milk to begin with.

I'm planning on investing in a good nursing bra without underwire first and if my supply is good and I can find something in my size with underwire I will try that next. Im doing my initial shopping at a local speciality store to make sure I get something that fits really well. Once I find a style and brand I like though I will likely start hitting google to save on subsequent bras.

  • Yes, they do make it should like its really simple to find them and no, its not and rarely do they look cute!. I would recommend at first that is is way easier to find tank top styles and things like that for the very beginning or you are home. Glamourmom.com come I got some great nursing tanks from. ( I like the longer style) and they have a built in bra that works for big boobs. I've got to be a 34F by now I imagine. Also bra wise with my first daughter I found at target, a brand called BASICs that is made out of like spanx material, no underwire and was a nursing bra. The spanx like material held me in enough and looked smooth underclothes even for when I went back to work. Last but not least, also at target they have these 2 packs of sportbra, but criss cross styled "sleep bras" that I swear are what I wore around the house for the first year. I wore them out too, but under more than one layer. Usually the criss cross nursing bra is not enough support but because these are racer back they, worked at least for me, I loved those and they were cheap 2 bras for $22, I wore em till the elastic wore out. Good Luck! There are some brands that make "pretty nursing bras" youlingerie.com for one, but I tried one for them and could not get the fit right. Good luck!

Here's the target link. The first 2 are the ones I talked about. Splurge on at least one good nursing tank top, you be glad you did. I tried being cheap at first last time ( I bought 3 old navy nursing tanks at $10 each and they were total garbage and a waste of money )

  • If the bra fits correctly, underwire isn't really a problem. The problem is finding the right bra/fit for our blessed top halves. I've been in wireless nursing bras for a couple of months now. Ain't nobody got time for wires :p

That said, a local fitting will help. Then you can try Amazon for different brands. The one I currently love is HotMilk and Panache for 34g+
Yeah, the hot milk are really cute! I did buy a couple of those last time. Forgot about that...
  • I used nursing bras with underwire and didn't find a problem.  Nursing tanks can be supportive enough if you're just around the house.

Spend the money for a couple good ones from "real" bra makers. The ones I got from Motherhood/Thyme were a joke.

Bravado makes a really nice bra and they have split/expandable cups sizes. I also went to a specialty shop to get one that was a 34I for when my milk first came in.

I started off with strict no underwires. I always heard that they can cause clogged ducts. I did end up finding on on clearance and bought it anyway, I hated it. So, I went back to my non-underwire nursing bras. My favorite were from Motherhood Maternity, but I wasn't buying as large as you would need, not not sure how they'd fit larger sizes.

This! I have heard that if the underwire diigs in anywhere, it can cause clogged milk ducts which could lead to mastitis...no thanks! I believe with my first I bought a non underwire bra from either motherhood maternity or thyme, I can't remember...but they wee supportive and comfortable (although my chest is not even close to that large, but I would just wear a sports bra at home because I found them easier to nurse in. Also I would recommend waiting until your milk has come in to invest in nursing bras because your boobs may get much larger when full of milk!
  • I have had four kids and breastfed all of them with under wire bras. Make sure to buy excellent quality and be measured correctly. I ffound the Anita bras to be awesome - and they come in big sizes. Way worth it. Especially if you plan to breastfeed long term. A good bra does so much for comfort.
  • I didn't wear underwire with my first because I was afraid of getting clogged ducts. I was really prone to them as it was and didn't want to take the risk.

Do you have any specialty stores nearby where you could try some on and be measured? I found that to be really helpful. My cup size is smaller than yours, but I was ok without underwire once I got used to it. I had a few styles of Bravado bras and liked them.

I am a DDD and went up to an F when I was breastfeeding my son. I wore underwire nursing bras nonstop and didn't have any issues. I also had no idea this could affect ur supply.

I live in Panache bras! They fit me super well and are usually pretty (yes I'm that vain!). Haven't tried their nursing bras yet but glad there is at least one other person out there that likes them. Will have to check out HotMilk

  • I bought a sampling of bras in my size from Amazon that had free returns and 3 hooks (seeing only 2 hooks on the band in the photo is a good hint that the bra is made IN large cup size, not made FOR large cup size).
I kept one from Hot Milk and one from Elomi.

Hot milk is ok and doesn't have underwire, but it had really thick seams running diagonally through the front, so thick that it is obvious under any shirt, no matter how thick.
I prefer:  Elomi Women's Smoothing Underwire Molded Nursing Bra  <- but it is thin compared to what I'm used to wearing... maybe because you are supposed to have nursing pads under it?

I am still on the prowl for something thick enough to hide my nipples and keep my tits a bit warmer.

  • I've heard rumors that the wires digging into you can affect milk supply, but I personally haven't had an issue. I've been wearing an under wire since high school and couldn't imagine going back. I've tried on ones without the wire because it's all some places had, but just couldn't do it. They weren't nearly as supportive. I haven't figured out where I'm going to buy a nursing bra big enough this time. I squeezed myself into the largest cup size that motherhood had last time around and it was not a pretty sight.
  • Thanks for all the great advice
