Toddler Leaks

My DD is now 21 months old and within the past 2 or 3 weeks I've started having a lot of leaks. I am still using the same one-size pockets and inserts that I've been using since she was 4/5 months old. The leaks are always around the legs. I use a variety of inserts in combinations: microfiber, tri-folded cotton prefolds, cotton flats, bamboo prefolds, bamboo doublers. I will usually put microfiber over bamboo, for example. I've stripped them and that got rid of funky odors but did not help the leaking problem. I notice that no matter what insert I use, it's always scrunched up between her legs when I take the diaper off, so I think that compression might be a part of the problem. Or maybe she is peeing a larger volume of liquid now. Or maybe my diapers are just old and the PUL is worn out around the legs.

Any advice for how to remedy this?

Re: Toddler Leaks

  • No. They'll be soaked between the legs but not up the back.

  • Sounds like a combo of toddler peeing more and not a great seal in the legs. Maybe try a different style to see if you have better luck. And MF is notorious for compression leaks.

  • Thanks, it's possible the elastics are part of the problem. I'll look into getting them replaced.

  • My guess would be the elastics.  They tend to wear out after about two years of use.  I replaced the elastic in a few of my diapers and it made a world of difference.  I need to get the rest done.  Can you see a gap between the leg and the diaper when you lift her legs up?

  • I had the same problem for a while. What worked for me was to put a joeybunz hemp insert under the microfiber insert, and that made it pretty much bulletproof. I usually do this now if we're going out and he's going to be in the stroller or a shopping cart or anything else that will put pressure on the diaper. Our leaking might not be caused by the same thing as yours, though- it sounds like you tried something very similar already. Good luck!
