I feel like it totally depends on how old the babies are, what type of car you have, how tall you and YH are and if they're both RF. May also depend on what type of carseats you have going on. Then again, I could totally be overthinking it.
I voted child behind driver, baby behind passenger but I agree it depends on whether the child is still RF or FF and how big the carseats are.
DS is FFing, so that leaves my 6'5" DH plenty of room to slide the seat back if he drives. Also, DS's seat is already there, so we won't have to move it.
Is there a reason one can't go in the middle? As I said in the other thread, my understanding is that the least protected child should go in the middle (I.e. "Safest" spot) if possible. And that the other child (usually the baby) should go on either side. But again this is assuming that you can safely install the car seat in the middle.
If you use the latch system, the middle position takes a latch from either side in my car, so you wouldn't be able to secure a 2nd seat next to it.

You can only borrow LATCH for the center if the vehicle allows it AND the car seat manufacturer allows non-standard spacing. For most cars & seats, you use the seat belt in the center position.

Right - this depends on how big your car and carseats are, but I would try to get one in the middle if I could. Makes it easier to have anyone else in the backseat too.
My son was only 23 mo and still RF when Natalie was born, but his seat has the option of. RFing w/less incline so it too up less space. Once he was FF I put him in the middle so he could climb in himself. Baby in the middle was hard for me to reach or climb in, so my babies are always on the side. When #3 comes I will put him/her behind me. I will just take the baby seat out so he can climb in. Once N is FF (not anytime soon as she is only 18 mo and it is SO MUCH safer to have them RF) I can have G climb in on her side.
I spoke with a certified car seat tech and she told me that any child who is forward facing should remain in the middle as long as possible (safest position) and the baby who is rear facing can go on either side. we drive a Honda pilot and will have my son FF and the baby seat RF so we plan to follow this model. I don't like the one on each side either because then its hard for anyone else to ride in the car.

Yep. The least protected goes in the center. If one is FF, they get the center. If both RF, the younger one goes in the center. It might not be possible to get the seats to fit and be independently installed side by side. Both seats installed outboard is still very safe as long as they are used and installed correctly.
Both of our seats will be outboard. My vehicle (2010 Subaru Forester) has a raised middle seat in the back (dumb!!), so carseats don't install safely in the middle. My 3.5 year old will be behind the driver (where she already is), and baby will be behind passenger. My reasoning is if I hear baby choking or something, I can quickly look back and see her from that angle with a carseat mirror. I cannot see DD's face very well when she is directly behind me.
In my DH's car (2014 Ford Edge), I may try to put the bucket seat in the middle, just so that a third passenger can still comfortably ride in the back seat.

Expecting another GIRL! Carter Grace due on 12/25.
There's no way I'm having my 2 year old get in on the side with traffic. She will get in on the passenger side (curb side when parallel parked) and the infant seat will go behind me since I have more control over that.

I've had very tactile children so a touch from me would sooth a cranky cry so my infants have always been opposite me (passenger side) in my car so if I need to I can stroke their face. Or replace a pacifier that falls out. But this only works in a sedan.

This. Our first son is in the middle He will move to the passenger side. Baby will go in the middle. The passenger side is ideal for us because when we have to park on the street I can get my toddler in from the sidewalk and keep baby next to me. Versus putting baby in first and having my toddler not holding my hand near the rode.
DD will go behind the passenger and this LO will go behind the driver. There is less room for me to carry a big infant car seat on the passenger side of the car in our garage. Plus, we'll be forward facing DD in just a couple months when she turns 2 and I'd like to better be able to turn to see her, hand her things, etc. and it will be easier to do if she's on the passenger side.
