Pumping at work/ cleaning pump parts Q

I'm pumping at work (literally, pumping right now ;)) and a quick question about cleaning pump parts. I keep them in the fridge during the day. Can I clean them with the steam bags daily and then wash with soap and warm water on the weekends? Or should I really bring them home nightly and clean with soap/ warm water?

Re: Pumping at work/ cleaning pump parts Q

  • you mean clean them in the steam bags at work in the microwave? i don't see why you couldn't- just give them a rinse and then steam them and dry them off.

i had 2 sets of pump parts, so i brought the dirty set home at the end of the day, threw it in the dishwasher, and brought the clean set to work for the next day.

  • Yes, clean them in the steam bags at work in the microwave.

  • Hmm.. the steam bags say to wash with soap and water first. Necessary?

  • wow, i've actually never used the steam bags, and i always thought that you could just throw the dirty parts in there and they'd come out clean-- apparently that is not the case. online reviews say that if you do that they come out with milk spots on them.

so, if you have to wash them with soap and water beforehand, i would just stop at that point and call them clean, TBH.
  • That is essentially what I do and its worked out fine. I store in the fridge during the day, rinse then steam every night (at home though... and sometimes if I haven't pumped as many times that day I'll skip a night) then wash with soap and water or soak in really hot soapy water on Sunday.

  • I double checked with the IBCLC at my pedi's office and she said it was fine.

    Thanks!

  • You're supposed to rinse them before they go in the steam bag? Well, shit. Mine seem to come out just fine with just steaming them and occasionally giving them a good wash...
  • I'm probably the laziest, but I just rinse the parts in the sink after each pump. Then I lay to dry in my desk drawer. Then I take the parts home and run through the dishwasher every weekend.

Hi, I'm new to this board (and BF in general...my girl is only 6 weeks old), but I refrigerate my pump parts for a few days between dishwasher cleanings to save water and time. Granted, I'm only occasionally pumping right now but after reading the reasoning that milk is good in the fridge for a few days, I figure the pump parts are too. https://forums.llli.org/showthread.php?69660-putting-parts-in-fridge
