Rock and play users- dilemma

So, my LO has been sleeping naps and night in her RNP. I know many are in the same boat. Then at her2-wk check up last week the dr warned against it for sleep saying it could increase SIDS risk and some neck issue. So, although she's not as restful, she's now in a pack n play at night still in RNP to nap. Then yesterday I started looking into safety on RNP and there are lots of people reporting torticollis (the neck issue) and flat areas on their heads. She sleeps SO well in that thing but now I'm paranoid. I found head supports on amazon. Wondering if those would help. Has anyone else heard anything along these lines?

Re: Rock and play users- dilemma

  • My 2nd had tortacollis. It's an issue because babies are sleeping on their backs. It was easily fixed with stretches.

  • Yeah, well, I felt the Dr. was a little alarmist about it.  Both of my older two slept in various swings, bouncy seats, car seats, etc.  Neither of them had any neck issues or flat spots on their heads.  LO is doing ok in the pack and play at night - well enough for me, anyway, it's the daytime naps that I don't have anyplace to put her that's not a bouncy seat, swing, etc.  I'm less concerned about SIDS during the day because I'm watching her.  Anyway, thanks, ladies!

  • My doctor goes I'm supposed to tell you this and this for safe sleep but....then proceeded to tell me about the rock n play and how her daughter slept in it for almost 5 months. Soooo I will continue to use it at night. She doesn't really nap in it anyway. And I thought flat spots were from laying on their backs all the time...

  • We got told the same thing at our 2 week appointment. We moved her to her crib. While she slept so well in the RnP, I know if something like SIDs happened while she was sleeping in there I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I could have had her in a place that helped to prevent it.
We are so excited to grow our family!

We don't have a RNP, but I can only get LO to sleep in the swing at night (not turned on) because it isn't flat and it cradles them like a RNP. My pediatrician was fine with it. We both need our sleep at night. During the day, he sleeps in the moby carrier. Flat head is a problem with many sleepers.

We don't have a RNP either but we do have this little seat/bassinet thingy that came with the pack n play. She naps in it and last night I had her start the night in it. I just want to say that I went to bed so nervous about this! She did fine but man-- I was worry city that I was making a big mistake. Not sure if I'll do that again.

  • I asked the pediatrician about the RnP too and she was perfectly fine with it. Now that DS has been diagnosed with reflux, it was actually recommended for me to put him to sleep in the RnP. She didn't seem concerned about it at all.

  • I made mention of using a RNP to my doctor without even knowing there were risks. She never said anything about it. I think we plan to leave her in the RNP for the first month or so.
  • I would listen to your pediatrician over random people on the internet.  The majority of pediatricians have the same recommendations as yours regarding sleep.  I get where you are coming from, but for me, it isn't worth the risk.  My LO has reflux and will not sleep on his back for more than 10 minutes at a time.  My pediatrician recommended diet changes and patience as it will get better.
  • I meant random people as in people who may or may not be medical professionals.  Any advice given by some one based on their own experience is anecdotal which is random.  I was simply saying I would trust my pediatrician's advice over the experiences of individuals.

Mine had Torticollis from it. I had no clue Before we got it but no flat spot. The Torticollis worked itself out just after a year but for a long time he turned neck, head and shoulders as one unit..

That being said DS3 has a RNP and we still use it but he won't be sleeping in it much longer except when we travel, he is going in the crib. He is 4 weeks

Another thing is I have noticed there is a significant amount of padding that has been added to the RNP's now from 2 years ago. We had been borrowing my SIL's with #2. We bought a new one with #3 and there is a lot more padding in the head area
  • Mine sleeps in a swing part of the night and when he was smaller he would only sleep at night if he was being held or in his car seat. Obviously I felt the car seat was safer.

Point being that on his back in the crib is safest and that is our goal but you have to make whatever works as safe as possible so you can get sleep too.

  • If a LO gets a flat area from a rock and play, where on the head would it most likely show up? Seems interesting to me given that the slant and slight uptilt of the rock and play would make it seem less likely to get a flat spot since there is less pressure on the back of the head. At least compared to a flat hard surface.

I'm not sure about the new ones but the old ones had a thin quilt layer over a hard plastic piece. Their skulls are still so soft that pretty much any pressure can cause them to be flat if that spot stays in the same position too long.
The one we have is a couple of years old, but there's not hard plastic in it...

FWIW I just met with a physical therapist for my DD's torticollis and she said RNP's are totally fine. It's the pre existing medical condition that causes babies to favor one side that is the concern, not necessarily where they sleep. If they have good range of motion, they can turn their head on their own when they sleep and avoid the flat spot.

Thanks for sharing that...I caved and let her sleep in it last night and she went five hours. She either has her head straight ahead or she switches side to side because she fidgets.
