Misoprostol For induction

Hey I'm still sitting here pregnang at 41 weeks tomorrow. My doctor would like to induce me on Thursday and wants to insert misoprostol to get labor started, if I start to have regular contractions than they will hold off on pitocin. So my questions are...

Were you induced with misoprostol/cytotec?
Experience?

I really want to wait for baby to come naturally but I'm told if I wait much longer he will be 10lbs and not fit in my pelvis. (Which I'm not sure is BS or true)

Thank you!

  • There are quite a few posts about induction via cytotec - try the search feature.

  • Well if you can find one please let me know or bump it. I couldn't find anything.
  • Wow my bad. I guess I could search cytotec instead of misoprostol. Sorry everyone for the annoying post.
  • No problem! After my experience one thing I would consider is how ready your cervix is. I know the cytotec is supposed to help with that but mine was high and thick and when I started contracting right away they wouldn't administer anymore.

  • I had it after my water broke and NOTHING happened for hours.  Water broke at 3pm, sat around in the hospital with nothing happening.  Misoprostol at 7pm.  Nothing happened.  Pitocin at 11pm.  Pushing started at 7am.  Baby born at 11:32am.

The doctor said Misoprostol made me more effaced but with no contractions or dialition it wasn't the end for me...
  • Thank you ladies! I did a horrible thing and asked Dr Google. It wasn't pretty.
  • I had two doses of cytotec and it got me ready enough that I started contracting and my water broke. I was able to avoid pitocin. Good luck !

  • I would love that that to happen! But I am going to ask if they will use cervidil instead. I can't believe how nervous I am. Ahhh!

I had the cervidil. Make sure you have someone with experience place it. It actually has to be tucked behind your cervix, and after a previous experience with a resident doing a procedure I refused anyone but a doctor or midwife to do it. Luckily I had the best midwife ever place it, he knew what he was doing.

It did make me more effaced, but I never had any contractions from it.
  • Well I guess the hospital doesn't have cervidil so I told my doctor I won't be induced then. He is now giving me a NST on Thursday and inducing Monday if need be with pitocin. Come on baby!!! Come naturally pleaseeee!
