Am I crazy

I REALLY want to get a puppy!

Re: Am I crazy

  • Puppies are AWESOME but a lot of work and they bite and nip because they don't know not to. That would concern me around a baby on the ground. A younger rescue perhaps? I think having a baby with the right dog is great, my LO LOVES her dog and therefore loves all animals. She could be so upset but as soon as she sees her dog, or even any animal (like the flock on ibis on our walk this morning) she literally squeals with delight.

  • Ive had puppies/ dogs before. The last dog I had was a rescue dog I got when he was 3ish from a shelter. Unfortunately he was mistreated and unsocialized as a pup. He was the best/ most loyal dog to ME but no one else. He had to be put down 5 months ago due to kidney issues. LO loooves animals. And I just think now is the right time. Heck we already have everything baby proofed why not add puppy proofing ;)
  • Sounds like your ready. Just make sure you get lots of Nyla bones and some other chewable goodies :) My dog loves the blue rubber brand of toys...The name slips me but I will find a link and post. I got her 3 toys when she was 2 months old. She will be 4 in Feb and all the toys are going strong so WELL worth the investment in my opinion.

  • I keep telling DH I want one for Christmas too!! We used to have roommates before kids and Luke always had his buddy Taylor (our roommates dog) even though it's been over 3 years since he moved out I keep telling DH that Luke is lonely and needs a friend! And with our neighbors house getting broken i to in broad daylight last week it would be nice to have a bigger dog :)

These toys are the ones I was talking about, We have the bone, a tire and a fillable 4 square one. They hold up GREAT. We found ours at our local PetSmart.
  • DH wants another dog (we already have a 4 year old mutt) and while I love our 4 legged baby like our 2 legged baby, I really don't need another reason to get up in the middle of the night since I have 2 already as the 4 year old dog still insists on peeing at 3am. I'm with @mcncheese‌

  • We want a dog but plan to wait until DS asks for one rather than get one when he's too young to appreciate it, and will inevitably ask for another, even if we have one already. IMO waiting kills two birds with one stone!

  • The answer is different for everyone. But I will say in my experience with our dog was that it was a lot more difficult when we added a 2nd baby. (Maybe just something to think about if you are planking another) plus my husband travels a bit so a lot of the responsibility fell on me which was really hard. We actually just had to put our Newf down a few weeks ago and I know in my heart it's not right for us to get another dog until the kids are a bit older.

Yuck at puppy breath. I love my pets but am glad they were house trained before baby. I would definitely think about that. If the pup has accidents ( he/she will) you will have to keep the baby and pup out of it while you try to clean up.
I have loved you SO long Cash......Now IDK...this might be the tipping point LOL ;)
  • @KFED103‌ A newf is actually on the top of our list. How was your experience?

They have the best temperment (well the 2 we had) so gentle and incredible with kids as babies. Ours we on the smaller side around 100lbs but they thought they were lap dogs :) Even though they are big, they aren't rowdy indoors if they get enough exercise. They just kinda saunter around and then lie in a cool corner.

But they are lot a lot of work. Grooming, ears, exercise, etc. And can be $$$$ if they get hip problems or arthritis. But both of ours were rescues and I've never had one as a puppy.

  • My aunt has had her Newfie since he was 8 weeks old. He is wonderful. He is 5 now (I believe) besides my own two dogs I would take him in a heart beat. His general attitude and disposition is lovely. I am a firm believer in its how they are raised vs breed on any dog but that is just me.

I personally have a basset/mix and a beagle. I don't know the other 1/2 of what my basset is mixed with we have our suspicions but I have to say they are two of the best dogs ever. They let LO do pretty much whatever she wants to them. The beagle I will say takes more abuse then the basset/mix. She will take it so long and then get up and leave. The beagle just lays there and takes it LOL.
  • Have you had a puppy before, or would this be the first time? I would worry about mess of potty training, with a baby crawling/toddling around. Also, I swear our dog wakes up most mornings before the baby, so there's that...

Cash, how can you not love puppy breath?!?! :)

I love our dogs, but I'm never doing a puppy again. 3 in 5 year plus twins. Mama is tired. Hehe

    Edited: spelling is hard.
