Pregnant after IVF – OB/GYN question

I am 8w2d pregnant after doing IVF.  My doctor told me I need to find a regular OB/GYN doctor and gave me a recommendation. We have been TTC for 3.5 years so I have been only seeing a specialist.  I called the doctor and the earliest they can see me is November 20 and that appointment isn’t even an ultrasound.  They just want to meet with me and do some initial blood work and tests.  My first ultrasound would be at 16 weeks.  Is this normal?  I feel like waiting until 16 weeks for an ultrasound is a long time and for anyone who has been through the IVF process, what possible initial tests/blood work need to be done?

Re: Pregnant after IVF – OB/GYN question

  • Lurking from PAIF.

I was released from my RE after my 6w5d u/s and appt. my OBGYN saw me at 8w5d and I asked to have another u/s then and she was fine with that. I go back at 12w for another appt and u/s. If it were me I would find someone that can take you sooner since I've never heard of someone that did IVF not having a 2nd u/s until 16w and it would make me feel uneasy.

  • I got pregnant with IVF and I had 3 ultrasounds with my RE, 5w6d, 6w6d, and the most recent being 8w3d this past Friday when I "graduated" from my specialist and was told I would be seeing my OB from now on.  I had called a few weeks ago to make an appointment with a new OB and my first appointment with them is tomorrow (9 weeks). To be honest I'm not sure if they'll do an ultrasound on me or not (I'm thinking probably not) but I do know that it will now be treated more like a normal pregnancy where I will not be spoiled with so many chances to see baby via ultrasound. From what I understand there should be an ultrasound around 12-13 weeks to take measurements of baby. But this is all new to me so I'm just learning as I go. Good luck to you!
  • Last time around I had an U/S with the RE around 6.5 weeks and he said I was being released to my OB but he wanted 1 more scan 1 week from then.  If the RE hadn't requested that I wouldn't have had another u/s until the 1/2 way point..  If you want a doc that'll do a scan then find a different doc, but if you like this one other than that, I'd stay.

  • Last time after two years of IF, I saw my RE until I was 8 weeks when I had an U/S.

Then I had monthly checkups at my GP because my OBGYN (and all OBGYNS in the greater toronto area in Canada) wouldn't see me until 28 weeks.

This was very frustrating as I would have liked some closer monitoring from a specialist (as I'm sure most women would not just ones suffering from IF).

I had an U/s at 8 weeks with RE, then at 12 weeks for IPS screening (It's free in Canada and a great way to check in on the little bean), then 19 week A/s (still with GP) THEN had an u/s at 36 weeks with my obgyn to confirm babes position.

It's definitely frustrating to wait when you are used to such close monitoring and have probably gone through a heck of a lot of get to where you are.

I would simply request a sooner U/S from your GP (totally within their scope). If you're in the US I understand you may have to pay (you don't in Ontario). As long as you're ok with that, go for it!

I think waiting for a great OB is worth it. Mine was the best rated in the area and totally lived up to it. I plan on going to one out of town that is highly sought after (I moved and need a new one anyways) as I'd rather have the best care possible and wait a little longer if I have to.

PS. I am 8w3D IVF (my ticker is wrong) CONGRATS! Crazy process but in the end solo worth it!

  • i am pregnant after IVF too!  I have had three ultrasounds so far, 5 weeks, 5 weeks 4 days, 7 weeks and again this week at 8 weeks 1 day.  After that I am graduating to an OB.  I had a pelvic pain specialist for the past two years who is an OB, but does not practice obstetrics anymore, so I was in kind of the same boat of not having seen a regular OB for a long time.  I couldn't get in to see the OB until Nov. 25th, when I will be 10 weeks 6 days (so basically 11 weeks).  I have no idea if she plans to do a scan or not, but I know her, I love her and she is the only OB I wanted to see, so I'm grateful.  I trust whatever she wants to do.  But I will probably ask to have one if I can :-)

  • I have my first ivf ultrasound on Thursday! I'm hoping I get discharged but I'm not sure what would happen after that.

  • Thanks ladies.  I called another doctor today and the wait to see her is even longer and she wont do an U/S until 18-24 weeks!  After 3 ectopics and going through IVF I guess I just wanted an earlier U/S to make me feel more at ease.
  • I would tell your OB your concerns and ask to please have an u/s on the 20th or sooner if anyone cancels or reschedules. That doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

The ultra sound push off could b in insurance cost
I am 10 weeks 2 days and was released from our Ivf dr at 8 weeks bc they said I was doing so well
I went to my obgyn on week 9 n told him I wanted an ultra sound bc my specialist had given me an ultra sound every visit which was sometimes a few times a week .
I could have paid out if pocket but my insurance would not cover an ultra sound at 9 weeks. I'm in nj in the USA w decent employer paid health care.
So that might be the issue is the dr being paid for his services
    Idk I agree tho
I was so spoiled at the Ivf clinic and now I'm just a reg pregnant girl. But I'm still nervous
    Good luck
  • You must be sooo happy :) congrats!! I also had ivf and am now 9 weeks, like you we have been trying for several years. 16 weeks sounds late for an ivf pregnancy, but this is also my first so I am just going off my experience. When I first found out I was pregnant my clinic also diagnosed me with OHSS so I have been followed by my ivf clinic weekly since I got pregnant (I am in Canada). I have already had 3 ultrasounds but I had to find an obgyn after getting pregnant and my first appointment is only nov 18. I contacted my ivf clinic and explained that my dr could only see me at 10 weeks and they said they would be willing to follow me until my first appointment. Maybe you can ask them the same thing, or at least an u/s to confirm the pregnancy is doing well? My ivf clinic actually will not let you transition out until you get an u/s to confirm its a viable pregnancy. I know in my case when I contacted the obgyn for an apmnt I was able to get in slightly faster since I was ivf too...otherwise they were giving me a dec appointment. Wish you lots of luck and a very health pregnancy!!
