How accurate are ultrasounds

My first ultrasound said I was 6 weeks which was 2 days off from my lmp. My second ultrasound came back 12 weeks which was right where i was supposed to be. Third ultrasound said 19 weeks which is also right where I was supposed to be. How accurate are early ultrasounds?

Re: How accurate are ultrasounds

  • was the second ultrasound done about 6 weeks after the first one? and then the third done 7 weeks after that?

If you had 3 right in a row, was there a reason? I'm going to need a little more information

  • Sorry yes the second ultrasound was done about 6 weeks after the first, and then the third 7 weeks after that.
  • first trimester ultrasound is the gold standard and is expected to be within 5-7 days of the due date. crown-rump length is used.

scans later than 12 weeks have an error margin of 10-14 days, even later. This is why later scans are not used to re-date a pregnancy.

  • Were you charting?  Do you know your ovulation date?  Your LMP often means nothing at all.

For instance, my LMP was May 5, but I know I didn't ovulate until CD16 of my normal 28 day cycle because I was charting.

  • As long as you are measuring normally and right on track, I wouldn't worry over your very first ultrasound too much. I'd say only a two day difference at 6 weeks is pretty darn accurate.

  • If you're measuring on schedule now, then why even worry about 1 or 2 days difference on your first scan? My first scan measured right +/- 1 day from my LMP, my second scan measured a week over, and my third scan measured right on track +/- 1 day. You're never going to know your EXACT due date as rarely do babies come on time. If you were measuring more than a week behind, then I'd be concerned, but 1 or 2 days off from your LMP? What are you so concerned about?

  • The earlier the ultrasound, the more accurate for dating purposes.

I wouldn't worry about a couple of days here and there. I'd expect to deliver between 38-42 weeks, so 2 days difference is nothing.
