Sleeping positions

Obviously, it's super uncomfortable to sleep on your back while pregnant (27 weeks here), and sleeping on your belly is, well, you know. So, sleeping on your side is the only option.

They recommend to sleep on your left side, but I'm curious what the effects are to sleeping on your right side? Is it completely detrimental to sleep on your right side and are you a slave to the left side the rest of the pregnancy?

All just curiousity here :)

  • I flip sides all night long. Probably 6-8 times a night I wake up and flip over. I'm exhausted!

  • At my last appointment I was "encouraged" to sleep on my left side because I've developed hemorrhoids. Sleeping on your right side can add weight and constrict the large artery that contributes to the hemorrhoids - so there's that.
  • I guess sleeping on your left side helps increase blood flow, but my doctor said either side is ok, especially if you flip back and forth and don't stay exclusively on your right side all night.  But even if you do, I think that's ok too.  She said left side is better than right, but right side is better than your back.  I think as long as you are not sleeping on your back or stomach exclusively, you're ok!
  • I sleep on both sides and my back with no issues. However, my baby hates it when I am on my right side, and throws a fit until I move, then she settles back down.

  • I am more comfortable on my right side but I do sleep on both. Usually if it is uncomfortable I will end up waking up and have to move.

  • I rotate between all 4 sides throughout the night.  Baby does not like it when I lay directly on him, but hes okay if i lay with a pillow propping me up off him a little bit.  Either way, looking forward to getting to sleep again without someone kicking me if I assume a position he doesnt like!

  • I sleep mostly on my right, ALL wrapped around my body pillow ;)
  • I've started sleeping on our chaise lounge....sitting up.
  • Add me to the switching sides all night long column.  I'm usually a stomach sleeper and cannot wait to resume that position.  I've tried a modified stomach position with a pillow underneath part of the belly but the pressure on my bladder is too much.  :(

  • I sleep on both sides and my back without issue - I find my left side to be the most uncomfortable actually

  • My only option has became the recliner. :-( even pretty much sitting up in bed is to bad for my heartburn and back. I try to turn side to side in the recliner but there's only so much you can move in a recliner. Getting back to sleeping in my bed with DH is one if the top things I'm looking forward to after the babies come. :-) (apart from cuddling with them)

  • Most nights I pray I'll get a little sleep on any side.  Back and stomach sleeping are gone and my hips kill me when I lay on my sides.  I've tried the pillow beween my legs thing but the minute I doze off I must kick it away and then I'm up 20 minutes later in pain.  Then there are the bathroom trips.....

  • I switch from side to side all night too. I sleep with a curved pregnancy pillow between my knees/under my belly and hugging a king size pillow. At this point flipping over is a huge production and feels like doing a 3 point turn!

  • I'm a stomach sleeper and am counting down the days until I can sprawl out on my stomach comfortably again! I am pretty even sleeping on my left and right (although my hip hurts quicker on my right side). I don't often lie on my back, usually only when my hips need a little break. LO loses it's mind and has a dance party as soon as I lie on my back. It usually wakes me up more.. Which sucks.
  • I sleep on my stomach with a pillow underneath & occasionally on my back with no problems so far. I've tried sleeping on my left side & it's uncomfortable- bothers my hips & lower back.
  • I also switch between left and right side. Baby seems to prefer when I lay on my right side.

  • I heard to sleep however you're comfortable, your body will adjust during the night anyway, I'm actually more comfortable on my left side, or maybe it's because that's the side that faces out, when I sleep on the opposite side of the bed, I'd rather lay on my right side. *shrug* Also, my bed is so soft and squishy (pillow top mattres + memory foam topper), I am actually able to lay on my back without any back pain, although it is getting harder to take a deep breath, so I try not to lay like that too much unless my hips are hurting from laying on my sides.

I was normally a partial-belly sleeper, not full on flat on my belly, but on my side and mostly on my belly. If that makes sense.

  • I switch back and forth as well.  My doctor said as long as I'm gettting sleep not to worry.  However i do know that sleeping on your right or your back could restrict blood flow.  I sleep on my back as well but I put a pillow under my right side to prop my up a bit so I'm not laying directly my the artery.

  • I switch between sides 3-4 times a night? Sometimes I end up on my back just because I've rolled, but my DH is paranoid about that, so he actually rolls me back on my side. I have a super comfy rocking recliner that I've used when I can't get comfortable as well.

I'm normally a belly sleeper. I miss it.

  • I sleep mainly on my right side, wrapped up in my snoogle :) It's heavenly. A couple times throughout the night, usually after I've gotten up to go to the bathroom, I'll lay on my left side for a while. But I always go back to my right.

I've read that circulation is better on your left side, and I know they tell you that if baby is inactive one day, to lay on your left side for a while and see if that gets them moving. But for me anyways, baby girl is the most active when I lay on my right side. I think she tends to lean pretty heavy on my right side though, as that's where most of her movements are, so she could move more then cuz she thinks I'm squishing her, ha.
