Iron & raspberry leaf

Hi all -

So I'm 38 weeks and I started taking raspberry leaf capsules a week ago. Taking about 4 a day & want to up this is to 6 from 39 weeks but I am very very anaemic and have struggled with my iron and iron absorption all through pregnancy. I finally managed to get my iron up to 104 which is still low but not dangerously so. However, I read in the leaflet of my capsules that they can stop iron being absorbed and to only take them at least 2 hours after taking an iron supplement. Am taking one of my three a day iron tablets with vitamin C tablet to help absorbation but have noticed in last few days I'm very lethargic and breathless and thirsty again which was linked to my very low iron in the first place. Will see midwife on Weds and ask her but just wondering if anyone else is very anaemic or took iron & raspberry leaf at same time? Really don't want to give up on the raspberry leaf as have heard such good things about it but don't know what to do for the best?

Re: Iron & raspberry leaf

  • Get the serum iron levels done. I guess severe iron deficiency pose a greater risk over the potential benifits of raspberry leaf tea. Discuss with your healthcare providers on priority .. Good luck

Thank you, I know - I'll be so annoyed with myself if I've worked so hard to get my iron up and then it goes super low again!

  • I had that problem big time in my first pregnancy but no problems in correlation with the raspberry leaf. I would be consuming a lot of dark leafy greens though in the meantime because those are loaded with iron and so is Kix cereal actually. Other whole grain foods and cereals also are but I know dark greens are loaded and absorb easiest into the body and also naturally contain high amounts of natural calcium and vitamin C. It helped in my pregnancy but my body just wouldn't absorb any iron it seemed. This time around I have been fine thankfully and very much enjoying my raspberry leaf tea.
