Mastitis during EBF

My LO is almost 18 months old, and I developed mastitis last week.  No clue how it happened (no nipple trauma, nursing strikes), it just did.  I've been on Dicloxicillin 250 mg three times daily, and have taken 4 days of a 10 day course.  I'm just curious for those who have had mastitis before, how long did it take after starting antibiotics until you were completely symptom-free?  I still have some mild pain and redness, and can still express small amounts of pus from the breast.  It is definitely significantly improved, however.  My DD has only been nursing twice a day for the past 3 months, but I've been trying to pump 3-4 times per day since the mastitis occurred.  I get very minimal milk when I pump, and I'm sure it's because my supply is so low at this point.  I'm just nervous that this is going to turn into an abscess because I can barely express anything from the breast.  Thoughts?  Thanks in advance for reading.

Re: Mastitis during EBF

  • i also got mastitis (and thrush, too, boy was that a good time!) when my DS was 18 months old. i started to feel a little better after 24 hours of the antibiotic, and a good deal better after 48 hours. i had some soreness in the affected breast for several more days. i could still feel a lump for a while after that, too. i tried to nurse as often as i could when i was home with DS. i did attempt to pump once or twice at work, and i got so little out that i decided it was pointless to dirty all the parts. instead i hand-expressed once or twice in the bathroom during the day, which seemed to be more effective. i don't remember feeling totally back to normal until i finished the antibiotics and antifungals- so maybe 2 weeks afterwards.

anyway, long story short, i think you should be okay. try to hand-express when away from your LO if you can. drink lots of liquids, rest as much as possible, take advil to keep the inflammation down, and try to get lots of probiotics. if you still have a noticeable hard area from a blockage duct, you can try taking lecithin several times a day to help break it up.
