Baby's eyes

What color eyes does your LO have? Any best guesses on what they'll end up with? Both my older kids had blue when born. They both changed to green really late (like 18 months). This LO has really dark dark greenish brownish eyes. It's hard to tell exactly. My eyes are very brown and my DH has very blue. I'm thinking maybe we'll have a brown-eyed girl this time.

Re: Baby's eyes

  • Blue. DH and I both have blue... All four kids also have blue. Very different shades amongst the six of us though. DS's are a deep blue for now but DD#2's are the lightest like DH and DD#3 are regular blue similar to mine. DD#1 are somewhere in the middle.

Isla's are a dark slate blue/gray color now. Assuming they'll be blue. I have blue eyes and dh has bluish/greenish eyes (stupid question: are hazel eyes only the brown/green combo or is it any combo, like blue/green?) and our other dd has blue.

  • They are blue right now. I have blue eyes and dh has hazel eyes. Dd has brown eyes (were brown from birth on) and brown hair. Ds1 has always had blue eyes and blond hair. Ds2 has brown hair but some of the new hair growing in is blond. I'm curious to see if his hair and eyes change colors.
  • Side note my older two daughters are and always have been bleach blonde... DD#3 & DS are brunettes... I'm dirty dishwater and DH has DARK brown hair.

  • I'm pretty sure they're going to stay blue. I have blue but I thought blue eyes were a recessive gene so they get them from grandparents? Neither of my parents have blue eyes mine came from my grandfather. Hers are just getting lighter blue every day so I doubt she'll go brown like daddy.

  • I'm gonna hazard a guess and say that DS#3 will also have blue eyes. DH and I both have blue eyes, as do our older boys. Very different shades of blue though. DS#1 has the brightest blue eyes I've seen, DS#2 has blue grey eyes like mine. So far DS#3 has very dark blue eyes.

  • Blue is recessive but if YH had the recessive gene he can pass it on to your LO. Was trying to explain this to DH in regards to blood type... I'm A- the girls are all A+ but DS is O+...we don't know DH's because he's a weenie ;)

  • My pediatrician is a close friend. She said they can change up to 3 years old! She said if they are dark or light they usually stay that way thought even if the color changes.

  • I had blue eyes until 6 months and then they turned hazel.

The genetics of eye color is s bit more complex than the 2x2 punnet square that people were taught in HS, but I'll refrain from bringing out my inner geneticist in this thread.

@golfingdarwinfish‌ that actually sounds interesting to me! That square in HS cracked me up because my eyes don't match my parents and neither does my blood type so the teacher was like hmmm I don't know. Haha

Based on the blood types you listed for you and your LO's, your can only be O+.
Also, if both parents have blue eyes, the children will never have brown. Recessive + recessive will always result in recessive.

I paid attention that day in biology. ;)

ETA: The first line of my post should say "your H can only be O+".

  • They are light blue and have gotten even lighter since birth so I'm hoping they stay blue. My mom and DH's dad both have blue eyes so it's possible but DH and I both have brown. Our other two girls were born with blue and both changed to hazel (my dad's eye color) but the blue was much darker and kinda gray.

eh, but I love reading everything people learned in HS bio ;)

When I'm not holding S I'll post in more detail!

  • All 4 of mine have blue eyes. They all started deep blue and got lighter. DD1 has blue green, DS has blue gray, DD2 has a clear light blue and I'm not sure what DD3 will end up with. I have blue eyes and so does DH, but my ex, who is the father of DD1 and DS has brown eyes.

  • His are a gray blue right now. At birth they were greenish brown. DH and I both have brown, though mine are much darker than his. We do both have close family with other eye colors though, so there's a chance his could stay blue.
  • I'm looking forward to GDF's insight. I hope I haven't been incorrect in my understanding all these years..... :-S

  • C was born with dark blue eyes (and still has them at almost 4 weeks). DH has blue eyes and I have blue/green eyes. However, I had blue eyes until I was a teenager so we expect C to have blue eyes as a child.

  • Definitely blue. DD1's eyes are blue, too, along with DH and mine.

  • I really have no idea what DD's eyes will do. They are still dark gray blue at 3 weeks. She looks so much like DH that a small part of me hopes they turn brown like mine but green like DH's would be so pretty. Who knows!

  • Same, @Saragoeswest‌. DS still has those newborn eyes, but he looks so much like DH (who had brown eyes) that I hope his eyes are green like mine.

  • Here's a bit of geeky anatomy & genetics info...

    • In Caucasians baby eye color tends to be blue because the presence of few stromal melanocytes, which in time will migrate or differentiate from pre-cursor cells.  The 'adult iris" color is present by 3-5 months post birth, when migration and differentiation are complete.
    • It's now hypothesized that eye genetics are not Mendelian in nature (i.e. no 2x2 punnett square), and instead is polygenic, meaning that it is influenced by more than one gene, as there are at least 4 pigment related genes that are known to influence eye color, though there is a specific gene that is thought to be the most influential.
ETA: I feel like I should leave a summary.  Basically, if two blue eyed people have any brown in their lineage, they could have a brown eyed baby since there are multiple genes that influence eye color, and not a single gene that gets all the credit.

I have a friend whose parents had brown hair and brown eyes, and he got blonde hair and BLUE eyes.  And all three of his siblings got the brown/brown.  So funny!

That's exactly my family and me. I'm the oddball out.

I'm really unsure on LO. I have brown, SO has blue. All his family are blue eyed and my whole family is 50/50.
So I'm guessing there Is still a chance he will have brown even though SO has no brown ?
    Am I wrong?

You are not wrong. There's definitely a chance your son will have brown eyes.

  • I have blue/green/gray eyes with a wedge of brown in each eye (sectoral heterochromia) and H has blue eyes with a ring of golden brown (central heterchomia). DS has those newborn blue gray eyes right now, but I'd be interested to see if he inherits the multi-colored eyes. From what I understand heterochromia is more likely if a parent has it.

  • I think DS will be brown-eyed, olive skinned, dark-haired like me. DD has blue-grey eyes, light blonde hair and fair skin. Not sure where that came from but she def looks like DH so no denying paternity ;)
