Cloth Diapering

Should I buy these diapers?

I was originally thinking I would wait to start building my stash until the trial program that accompanies the diaper service package we are getting. However, my boss is selling a bunch of cloth diapers and the price sounds good to me, but I'd like to run it by you ladies to see what you think.
The ones I'm interested in are fitted diapers - Motherease Sandy's. There are 9 size small (8 - 20 pounds) and 11 size large (20-35 pounds). They would be $5 each, and she says they are in excellent condition. (I live in Canada and this seems to be a popular Canadian company)
I've read some reviews and some people say these are excellent for overnight but may be too bulky for daytime. In which case is this too many diapers? Is it too early to buy so many of one kind?
Also, how should I wash them before I use them?
Thanks!

Re: Should I buy these diapers?

  • I didn't find them to be as super bulky as everyone makes them out to be.  They are by no means trim, but you could certainly use them during the day and it wouldn't be overkill.  I used mine overnight and had to add doublers to get them to last the whole night.  I personally prefer trimmer options for daytime normally, but these are great if you're going on a longer outing and need something with extra absorption.  Plus they're soft and squishy and come in cute colors.  I don't know that I would buy all 20 of them, but I think you should get a few to try out for sure.

  • I don't see a problem being a pile of the same thing. Both times I have bought a stash it has been all at once full package birth to potty training. Unless it's really expensive (and a poor resale value) or potentially really difficult to use I think it's ok to have some faith in yourself about making a good choice and/our being able to accomplish using your chosen diapers. There's no one right way, only the way that works for you :)
  • Thanks all, this is helpful. I'm going to think about it. I think I'll at least buy some, if she's willing to split the package. Thanks!
  • I get why people have a variety in there stash. It just seems like a great number of people agonize over baby purchases when really they have narrowed things down to some really good options any of which would most likely work out for them. I like to encourage people to let themselves off the hook a little. Parenting is stressful enough as it is right? :)
  • Its not about making good initial choices and having faith in yourself, not even about variety.  I have TONS of faith in my decisions...and I jump right on in.  But here is the thing, I spend a lot of time now with an almost 6 month old trying out different dipes, because I invested in a huge lot of Best Bottoms (which are wonderful for most) and they didn't work for my baby.  Seriously, I had other diapers thank God, but the majority of my stash did not work for my baby.  Now I'm destashing and adding left and right.  I think it is smart advice to send along to buy a few and see if you like them.  If I were the OP I'd buy a few in each size.

  • It's really cool the way there is no one right way to do things, it leaves room for everyone to find their own way.
  • I'll jump in to say Sandys diapers are really nice diapers. At that price and in good shape they'd be worth getting- the smalls in particular (the smalls will fit early on before OS diapers do so they're likely to be useful.)
  • Also, if she's a FTM, she may find out her preference for diaper type may be totally different than what she thought it would be.
  • Just buy the diapers.

You can always resell if you don't like them.

  • Thanks all, I've decided to wait and stick to the original plan not to buy any diapers until after I've tried them out for a bit and know what I like and what works on the baby. I appreciate your input!
