Mommy Mobile

My boyfriend & I are discussing the purchase of new wheels to accommodate our growing family. We are lean towards a Mini Cooper Countryman. So, what's everyone driving?

Re: Mommy Mobile

  • We currently have a 4 door Nissan Altima that we love and I traded in my first ever car to get to have the bigger size when I got pregnant last time!
Eventually we will want something bigger, but we haven't talked much about that yet.

  • @tiffbot1985‌ Thanks! My current car only seats 2 and has a lot of miles on it.
  • We have one of the newer CRVs, but DH drives the F250 diesel I had before we got married with the tiny backseat. He's trying to use a carseat as an excuse to upgrade trucks but I think he just hates that it's not 4WD.

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.

  • @paintdadanta‌ Me & your mister might get along. I like the Mini because it has 4WD, very safe.
  • We have an 11 year old Acura MDX which I adore. I know the new ones are crazy expensive but if you can find a bit older one and put about $1500 into it it's just as good. Tons of space, not too bad on gas, and I like being up high so you can see farther ahead of you.
  • I have a 2014 Subaru Forester. I can't say enough good things about it. It will easily fit our two in the back seat with enough storage space in the back for a stroller. Plus it has great gas mileage and AWD.

H has a Mazda 3 5-door and we will not be able to fit two car seats in the back- We are tall people, and I barely fit in the passenger seat with a RF car seat behind me. DS will have no leg room behind H if his seat is put there. Plus I really loathe the car in general.

Our main issue is getting stuck in the mud. I have a couple horses and my old truck is notorious for getting stuck especially with horses in tow. But I got suckered into it with a great price and tow capacity. I mean who ever finds a three-year-old used Ford with only 8k miles on it in perfect condition ;)

  • I love my Ford Explorer. It wasn't cheap but I'm confident we are going to get a lot of miles out of it!

  • I drive a Toyota Sienna and LOVE it. Love. Push button doors, space, and a million cup holders. I highly recommend it.
  • I have a Subaru Outback, but it's mileage is getting up there so we are thinking of getting a toyota highlander.

  • I drive a Pathfinder. When this baby comes, my oldest will have to climb in and out of the trunk to access the 3rd row seat but she does it pretty often now and it's not too bad.

  • I'll know in two weeks if I'm getting my tesla. Can't find a safer vehicle and it makes sense for our first baby. :)

  • We just got a 2015 Toyota Highlander in August. It has a third row that folds down flat when you don't need it and you can press a single button for the trunk door to lift up or go back down. Lots of space and I know from experience that Toyotas last forever. Instead of trading in, we kept my 1999 Toyota 4Runner as a backup and it has ~197,000 miles on it. Seats 8. :)

@paintdadanta‌ We are all about the towing capacity too! How many horses do you guys have & what kind?!
I only have two right now as a sold one due to finances last year. I have an overo paint-quater horse mare and a tobiano paint gelding who has the medicine hat markings along with a blue eye. I'll have to edit the post tomorrow and share a couple pictures of them :)

The horses also explain my username as I own paints (paintd) and then adanta is Cherokee for soul (I use to do a lot of research on Native American cultures so it fit).

  • @inzu, I live Teslas! They are sold in Texas so they're kind of a pain here, also outside our budget. Completely, jealous if you get one.
  • My DH has his truck (which thank god it's crew cab) I have an Altima, so we will be keeping our toys. However DH wants me to get a new Jeep he said he wants bigger and safer. I said NOPE! I do not want a payment.
  • I am on my second Nissan Murano and we still have the first as a backup.

I don't know about your financial situation, but I wouldn't make any long lasting big money decisions until figuring out how to budget for this baby!  I watched my brother do that and he regretted it during those years of having to pay daycare and a car payment.

I have a Ford Focus ZX5 (the 4 door hatchback) which I think will be fine for 1 kid.   My husband drives a late 90s BMW that is always giving him problems, especially in cold and rainy weather.  We are in the market for a new (used) car, but not having a lot of luck finding what we want.  Ideally we would get a 2006 or above Rav 4, but people hold onto those things!

ETA: we are also not into having a car payment, so we will be buying it outright.

  • Toyota highlander- without a third row. Eventually we'll upgrade to either a mini van or SUV with A 3rd row :)

  • I have a 2010 Ford Fusion and DH has a 2003 Chevy Blazer, both of which run fine and are paid off.  But I can't wait until we can get a new car... and maybe even go crazy and get a foreign one (we live near the Ford headquarters so buying foreign is frowned upon in my neighborhood)

Your comment made me laugh! Thank you for that!

I have a 08 yaris and H has a '11 Lancer. I'll change my car when I switch jobs and going for an SUV. All this snow up here in Canada in the winter, I don't want to stay stuck anywhere.

    We have a Kia Soul.

We had a Ford Escape, which we traded in because it was just too expensive (gas + car payments were over half my income each month) and bought a Ford Focus. The Focus was getting up in mileage and we were thinking of starting a family and frankly that car had NO room for legs in the back.

Price + space + quality we could not do better than the Kia Soul. There is SO MUCH ROOM in that thing it's ridiculous. (And the 'truck space' seems minimal but the seats 60/40 fold down - so if you have a lot of stuff, or big stuff, you can have the car seat on one side and the other side folded down.)

That said, the look of the car isn't for everyone but the Sportage is nice too and a little more...normal looking lol - and we would have gotten one but I was driving a lot so we thought we should get the gas savings instead of the looks.

FORGOT - It had a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty so literally any problems that we had (all minimal) were fixed free. One headlight got moisture in it, replaced for free. One roof track (looks only) got dented and was pulling up (because squirrels dropped huge nut things on my car) replaced for free.

I've been looking at Foresters. I currently drive an 11 year old standard cab Ford Ranger, and while it can accommodate a car seat (there's even an anchor for one), it's still only a two seater; plus if it's raining then there's no where dry to keep the stroller. I really like the Outbacks, too, but I think they can be a bit pricier than the Forester. *sigh* I have no clue how we're going to pay for childcare AND a car payment. But the truck's gas mileage makes just swapping cars with the hubs and his 45 minute commute not really viable either.

  • DH and I are looking at VWs, i was leaning towards the Golf (been a hatchback driver my whole life), but after DH rode in the back, the thinks the Jetta Sportwagon or Passat may be more spacious and suit our needs.

  • I drive a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander and absolutely love it!
