Boy Names

We are stuck. Don't like much out there for boy names, but we've gone back to the drawing board several times. Yes, they are different. DH has Scottish roots, so that's where the names come from. I'm partial to the M name case DD's name starts with an M (Maisey). Be honest, but gentle. :)

Re: Boy Names

  • I would say no to Gannon mostly because of the Legend of Zelda games. The series has been going strong for 25 years with no signs of stopping.

  • Ah shit. I had no clue about it being on that game..... This poor kid is going to be nameless or stuck with "Nacho," which is what his name has been since the positive pee stick....

  • I like the nn Mac a lot but I do very strongly associate Macallan with the whisky and Im not a huge fan of booze related baby names.
  • Macallan is not unheard of where I've lived. And certainly wouldn't be for many Canadians.

    I quite like the name.

    Much better than Naco, lol.
  • Hubby and I have Scottish roots too and I've always been partial to Malcom, Mitchell, and Murdock; if you're sticking with the M theme. My personal choice for a Scottish boy's name has always been Gavin.

This is why I voted the other name. That's the first thing I thought of.

Thanks for the suggestions! I had thought of Malcom, but that was nixed early on. DH is set on Loche for the middle name, which I don't mind. I have a close friend who named her son Gavin, so I felt like that name (which was on the early list) would be weird. Mitchell is great, although I don't know if it goes with Loche all that well. I'll roll that one around for a bit....

I think the one thing I learned through this process, there's always going to be someone who hates the name you pick and someone who loves it. Someone that has a negative connection and someone with a posituve connection with it. There will almost always be some sort of commercial connection to a name, whether it be booze, a video game, famous cartoon, doll, sneaker ect. I guess I'm just trying to put together a name that isn't 1) too mainstream 2) too unusual and 3) doesn't sound absolutely ridiculous!

I'll admit, some of our first round choices, now that I look back, were awful. :) Macallan was suggested by one of my closest friends and it's grown on me.

  • My sons name will be Oliver. Oliver Loche sounds good I think. But I am a spanish speaker...and it's you who has to feel if it's the Right one...At first I was looking for a Jewish name... Then when I heard Oliver, it was clear to me that this was his name. ;)

This is why I voted for Gannon. I think it's amazing. My favorite Scottish makes that I can't get DH on board with ever are Lachlan and Duncan. I like Macallan, too.

  • Macallan makes me think of the whiskey, so I voted for Gannon (I have no knowledge of Legend of Zelda). I don't really mind either name, they're different but they don't sound made up and they don't look like you were trying hard to be you-neek.

  • @Ducktale‌ - "you-neek" - I love it. Maybe that should be his name....

  • Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE Legend of Zelda fan, but my first worry would be with other kids during school. Gannon/Gannondorf is the recurring villain of the series, and we know how kids can be. :( If it had been the name of one of the 'good' characters, I would have been all over it because I love how it sounds.

  • I am not a big Zelda or whiskey person so didn't think of either when I read the names. I picked Macallan for the nickname!

  • Macallan would be my choice because I love Mac so much. And as some pp's are saying, though I know of the other ones association with Zelda (barely) that wouldn't really change my mind if I liked the other name the most. And the whiskey reference wouldn't bother me either so I'd just go based on preference.

I come from a big Scottish family (Wallace Clan!) so I've always loved
Alister (but I'd kill anyone who called him Al)
    Blaine
    Brodie
    Colin
    Elliott (our pick)
    Gavin
    Graham
    Logan
    Malcolm
    Reid
