39 weeks with no signs of baby coming any time soon, WTF!

Hi, I wouldn't say that I'm new to the board bc I've been following it throughout my entire pregnancy (just not posting anything). I'm 39 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I'm starting to get a little frustrated. Thankfully baby is head down and has dropped but the most of "anything" that I feel are a couple pelvic cramps here and there with a lot of constant back pain bc she's so low. I rarely have braxton hicks and if I do, it's usually because I've caused them by walking and continuing to be active, and when they happen, they're not that strong. This may be TMI but at my last Dr. visit cervix was "softened" but I still wasn't dilated at all. I guess I'm wondering if anybody else has experienced this and if so, how long did it take your body to "wake up" and realize that it needs to go into labor. I would like to have a natural labor but at this rate, I'm probably gonna have to be induced.

  • Be patient. You still have probably three weeks until you would have to be induced, so don't get ahead of yourself. You can go from zero dilation to labor very quickly, so it really means nothing. Same with lack of Braxton Hicks. If baby is head down and has dropped, your body is doing what it is supposed to do. I am also 39 weeks and have a lot of a Braxton Hicks, etc., but I haven't gone into labor yet either. But, I am not even to my due date yet, so why would I expect to? Just relax. It will happen when baby is ready.
  • I'm going to echo what everyone else said and add that I'm almost 39 weeks with my fourth, and I've had no signs of labor starting. It will happen eventually, and there's no need to start worrying about induction for at least a couple of weeks (barring any medical conditions or issues, of course).
  • I'm on the same exact boat! approaching 40 weeks tomorrow
  • Doctor told me that 75% of babies are born between 39-41 weeks. Sounds like your situation is pretty normal. Patience...
  • Glad to hear other ladies' support. I have been aiming for a natural birth but he discomfort is starting to overwhelm and frustrate me. I'm with you, OP!
  • I'm 40+1 with no signs of baby and this is my third child.

With my last baby I had no signs of labor at my 40w6d appt... She was born a few hours later.

Baby will come when ready. Like others have said you probably have a couple weeks to go and that's ok. Signs mean nothing until you are in active labor.

  • If letting things progress naturally is your goal, keep that in mind!  As PPs have said, especially with your first, you may not have any signs at all until it is the real deal.  Speaking from experience, being induced intensifies labor, so don't rush baby out until she's ready.  It will happen when it is supposed to!  Good luck
  • It is nice to hear that other people had no signs of being ready prior to labor starting. I haven't had any Braxton hicks, baby is still pretty high and my doctors don't do cervical checks. I am 39 weeks. I am fine with waiting another couple of weeks but was nervous that I'm not really anywhere near showing signs yet... this post is reassuring that not everyone has "symptoms" prior. It is also reassuring because I have been told that I am not uncomfortable enough for the baby to come by numerous family members...a little frustrating.

Being uncomfortable does not mean baby won't be here soon. People are ridiculous!

With my last pregnancy I felt the best I did the entire pregnancy my last two weeks of being pregnant. I went into labor on my own at 40w6d and baby girl arrived in 1.5 hours. You never know!!

  • I'm from October14 and just wanted to say I'm 40 weeks 6 days and no signs of labor. I have an induction dated for the 10th but really really want baby to come on his own. It is so hard waiting around.
  • You're a first time Mom AND not even at your due date yet, patience is a virtue! You probably have another two weeks to go. Any pregnancy book covers this, it's basic information but you can try walking and sex for some natural remedies. Really though, baby comes when she is ready and that's that.
