Nurses and Exec's-Job Opportunity Help

I have a masters degree in nursing. I hold a director level job in a hospital with no true direct reports but my work influences all of the nurses in the hospital. I report to a VP who reports to the COO.
I've been given the opportunity to move into a new director role with 3 direct reports to start with and the ability to influence the entire hospital staff including leadership and medical providers. The position reports to the COO. It would remove me from nursing a bit; I'd oversee the person hired to replace me in nursing. I'd also potentially oversee a doctorally prepared educator.
Do I take the job or not? Hours and commute stay the same. Not sure about the salary yet. My reservation is that I want to keep the option of a nurse executive role open for the future and I don't know if removing myself even one role from nursing for a more global sphere of influence and higher reporting structure would hinder a nurse executive role in the future? I've been upfront with the COO that this is a concern. She understands and said she woul be willingly to let me try it for a year. That sounds good but in a year my current job will be filled by someone else. I'm rural so there aren't other places to go work unless I relocate a fair distance. My other reservation is how do I turn down such an opportunity that is really a promotion? It seems like I'd be saying that I'm not up for a new challenge. Thanks!

  • That's what I needed to hear-a different perspective. Thanks! You are probably right in that it won't make a difference.

  • agree with above, I don't really see how this would prohibit you from being a nurse executive... it sounds like you'd actually be broadening your skill set while still being involved in nursing as well as with other disciplines...and with IPP/IPE getting so much attention lately, I don't see how that could be a bad thing, it would be something you have to offer that a lot of others don't have.  But not really knowing the structure of the hospital or promotion rules/norms in place, maybe there is more to it than I see?
If you're not already a member of AONE and/or your local affiliate chapter, you can also get involved with that to make sure you've still got a toe in nursing...
    GL it sounds exciting :)
  • Could you set it up in such a way that you are 'seconded' to this position for a year. That way the person they hire is also only contracted into your position for a year. If at the year mark you meet with your manager and for whatever reasons you both determine that this position wasn't a fit, you can go back into your position - no problem.
  • I agree with @mrssqueegy‌ this sounds like a step toward an executive role rather than a step away, and definitely a promotion for which you should receive a salary increase. Especially since you'd be supervising the person who takes your current position, it's the same track as before, just a step up. Take it! Your COO already knows the career path you want to follow and is on board so there's no reason not to.

Thanks, everyone. I think my tendency to lack self confidence is coming out and urging me to play it safe and find reasons not to take on a new challenge. I made a pros and cons list and the pros for taking the job was larger than the cons. Here's to moving up!
