Cloth Diapering

CD and EC?

Is anyone practicing elimination communication while CDing?

I'm curious to hear others' experiences, especially with newborns.

I am pregnant with my first, and considering doing EC, at least part time.

To be clear, I'm not talking about potty training. This is about teaching the baby cues so they prefer a toilet, learning to read their signals so they can be taken to the toilet, and still diapering for misses until the child is old enough to go to the toilet on their own.

Re: CD and EC?

  • We gave it a half-assed try early on and decided it wasn't worth the time. I think any "successful" sessions on the toilet were probably more due to luck than baby understanding cues. Also, there was a brief period of a few months when I could tell that a poop was imminent, but I could never get the diaper off fast enough and get to the potty. And then, we started to transition to solids and DS's cues and poop schedule became really unpredictable. So, maybe my knowledge or commitment level wasn't what it needed to be, but it wasn't all that important to me in the grand scheme of things either.

Might be worth cross-posting this in the attachment parenting forum.

  • we sort of EC. poop cues were very obvious, so since about 5 or 6 months old he has been pooping on the toilet instead of a diaper. Sometimes we catch pee also, but again it wasn't worth it as all day would be in the bathroom. I'm glad we did EC for poop though. I've only had a handful of dirty poop diapers in the last 10 months.

  • I wouldn't call what we do EC but I wouldn't call it potty training.

We take DS to the potty for every diaper change. I've learned to recognize the need to poop (grunts and fussing). He pees on the potty at every sitting and still in his diaper. I don't cue him in any way. Ill state matter of factly what happened but that's after the fact. We started the routine around 4 months but we sat him sporadically before that around 2 and half months. He's now almost 6 months.
