Tri-vo-sol

Did anyone's pediatrician recommend they give breastfeeding babies 1 dose of tri-vo-sol a day? The lactation consultants never mentioned needing this and the pediatrician gave me contradicting breastfeeding advice.

DH says I should follow ped's advice, but LC are specialized in the field if breastfeeding and I told him I feel more comfortable following their advice for breastfeeding.

Any one else btdt?

Re: Tri-vo-sol

  • Pedi told me to use it because breastfed babies don't always get enough vitamin D. So we use it. I bought poly-vi-sol.

  • Pedi recommended D drops as it is just a single drop vs an entire dropper with the other stuff. We just put the drop on the pacifier and let C suck on it.

Nobody ever mentioned this to me?? Not even the pedi. Is it something I should be doing?

I was just thinking the same thing. No one had said anything about vitamins to me.

  • Okay this makes me feel better! She said about half of breastfed babies don't get the required vitamin D and recommended it. She also recommended I pull LO off each breast after 8-10 minutes which is opposite from what LC said and made me question the need for vitamin D.

    Thank you for your responses!

Yep!! Vitamin D is a must....good for you to take as well! We use D Drops, because it's a single drop instead of a dropper full. DD used to projectile vomit the di vi sol, so we got the d drops and problem solved.
  • We were told to do vitamin d as well. We use Baby D drops.
We are so excited to grow our family!

  • DD has choked and projectile vomited twice after giving her the tri-vi-sol. I'm going to have to give her the regular vitamin d drops.

  • What the?! I've never heard of giving vitamin D drops before! I never did with DS. Whoops. Do you just buy them in the vitamin aisle I assume? Are their ones specifically for infants? :-S

Yes and yes! But seriously, get the Baby D Drops....best invention ever.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend the tri-vo-sol, poor DD had scary projectile vomit tonight after taking it. I am going to pick up the regular vit D drops and see how that works.

  • we also used the Carlson D drops; they are just in an oil base with no flavor at all.

  • We use the infant D drops from Vitacost. I give my son (3 years old) two drops a day and my newborn one drop a day. Well, in theory I give her a drop a day. I forget a lot :/

For you CA ladies, speaking as an Esthetician, the average adult can get their daily Vit. D from about 15 minutes in the sun and their whole body doesn't need to be exposed - a hand would do. You can get that walking to and from your car or sitting by the window in your house. BUT. I have no idea how it works or the amount needed for infants vs adults which is why we are supplementing the di vi sol like our doc prescribed. Better safe than sorry. Just my two cents.

Actually, a window doesn't count - windows block uv light. That's why you can't get sunburned inside...
They only block a percentage of uv. Someone might not get burned (although it is possible with sensitive skin) but, the uv still gets through. That's why people pay more for good car window tint that also blocks uv. Take the left side of a trucker's face as an example. Significantly more aged and damaged from uv than the right.
