Telling of the Birth Stories

What crazy random birth stories have you been told in the last however many days/weeks since you gave birth? My HB instructor told me to expect that when people come to visit, they will need to tell their birth story as a way to process it. I didn't expect that random strangers would also do this, but I am finding that having a newborn is like a beacon for people to talk to you about their story. Either that or I am very approachable.

I just got back from my local Michaels and while I was there I met an interesting lady. Here is what I learned about her. She is 87 years old from Switzerland. She met her husband when she was 14 working in her parents' cafe. She married him when she was 18. She had 3 girls in the course of 4 years (they didn't have birth control in those days you know). Her baby was transverse and delivered with foreceps. The doctors took her out feet first without anesthesia. This completely destroyed her uterus making it impossible for her to have children and resulted in her needing a hysterectomy. Afterward, she overheard one doctor say to another that maybe they should have done a c-section. She was 22 when she had her last kid. After she had given birth and was lying there half dead, her husband was crying. She assumed that it was because he was so in love with her, but he turned to her and said, "Not another girl".

After 22 years of marriage she found him naked in her home having sex with a woman she had introduced him to from Germany. She worked in his law firm. She said that her father had refused to speak to him again after a private conversation he had with him in which he said that he did not believe in God, only the almighty dollar. She said that had she known about that conversation she wouldn't have married him because she believes that you can't trust someone who does not believe in a higher power.

She has been happily married for 30 years to a man who is 20 years younger than her. I gave her a high five for that. Apparently this husband is not as smart as her last husband, but he makes up for it with his good looks.

After she had finished telling me her life story, she went about her business. Then a few minutes later came back to tell me that I had great skin. I thanked her, but honestly, my skin is terrible right now. My chin has broken out like it's picture day in junior high.

  • Hahaha I love older people they have the best stories if people just took the time to listen to them. No one has done that to me yet.

  • I had an older lady approach me in Target yesterday and she started by asking how old the baby was, and then how I was, and the delivery went and then told be about both of hers. Nothing super out of the ordinary in her story but my husband was so shocked someone would stop us and talk about that. But she was so excited to just see the baby (didn't try to touch her) and tell her story I couldn't blow her off... It was kind of cute.

  • Well, my MIL told me that with my BIL, she was knocked out for the c section JUST enough so she couldn't scream. She still felt everything.

I told that story to my doctor and any nurse that would listen before they took me to the operating room. I was terrified.

  • Nobody has told me any birth stories this time. Maybe it's because I'm herding three kids and look like a zombie and I only give half smiles when people happen to successfully make eye contact with me.
