Sleepy nursings- what are your thoughts

At this point with L we were still in NICU and I was pumping so this is my first experience with a brand new newborn at home. He nurses constantly, mostly every 30 minutes to an hour and stays on sometimes for 45 minutes to an hour. We checked and adjusted his latch to make him more efficient with a lactation consultant but his MOTN feedings are insane. Last night he flipped out if I stopped him and he nursed from 3:00-4:30 straight. I'm thankful for an enthusiastic feeder, but tired. I started to doze off during the feeding last night and it made it much more bearable and I'm feeling more rested this morning because I fed while half asleep instead of getting myself up like I had been doing. We co-slept with L so I am a pretty "aware" sleeper in that I wear long sleeve, keep the sheets at my waist and barely move when babe is in bed with me, but I don't want to be irresponsible. What are your feelings on groggy nursing, should I get myself up and awake?

Re: Sleepy nursings- what are your thoughts

  • Just for clarification, I am totally not complaining about the constant nursing, I know that's expected and honestly I am thrilled given the jaundice mess we had last time!

  • This makes me feel so much better! I feel like a new woman today and I honestly think it is because I slept during his long sessions. I just wanted to make sure this was acceptable and not completely irresponsible. Thanks, ladies!

  • Heck, I STILL groggy nurse my babe and she's 20 months now. Just make sure none of the other rick factors are around (which I doubt given that you've been doing this awhile now) and that you're not dangerously sleepy and I should think you'd be fine.

  • I bedshare if I'm really tired (i.e. DD2 is up for her third or fourth time that night). She's a really gassy baby, so usually she's not really hungry, just uncomfortable and the cuddles calm her down. Before, I would sometimes fall asleep nursing, then wake up a while later and try to move her to her crib, then she would wake up. I'm all for just doing what I can to get sleep right now.

  • I couch nursed with Amelia the first several weeks, but more because I have oald and she wasn't able to keep up lying down. But I still bedshared, lol! I got up to nurse, but brought her back to bed with me. Actually, she's asleep in my bed right now.

  • You're good, Poppy. Elliott will start off his night sleeping in his bassinet part of the PnP next to my bed but by the 2nd or 3rd nursing sesh, I just bring him into bed next to me and co sleep. Like you, I'm a very light sleeper and so I feel very comfortable with him sleeping in bed with me. Do what you need to do to get some sleep!!! :-)

  • I also bed share. Honestly you do what is best for your family and what you feel comfortable with. If you are comfortable with co-sleeping I say go for it! There will always be horror stories but use your mama instincts on what is best for you. Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies :) this makes me feel better
