Positive outcome of empty sac at 5wks?

at five weeks four days I had my first u/s done and at first my doctor question if I was even pregant cause she couldmy find anything. Than after five minutes she found a small circle but nothing inside. She said this is common and she told me to come in a couple days to check again and check my levels. After reading about blighted ovums I'm not too optimistic. Did anyone experience this at 5 weeks and seen a fetus at 6?

Re: Positive outcome of empty sac at 5wks?

  • I know with what is going on with me...about negative blood test and positive urine test I went ahead and made an appointment..and she said they wouldnt be able to really see anything at all until about 7/8 weeks so they didnt want to see me before then..maybe wait until 7 weeks? and try again

Well I went because a suspected uti and this is my first pregnancy so I wanted to make sure everything is fine. I think even if the sac still doesn't have a fetus when I go the the doctors tomorrow, I'll wait till 7 weeks to check again before freaking out about it.
  • It is common to only see the sac at 5 weeks. Fetal pole and heart beat are normally seen after 6 weeks.
  • Don't waste your money or time on another ultrasound tomorrow. Wait a week or two. Were you temping? If not it's entirely possible you're not as far along as you thought, but what you saw is normal for 5 weeks.

Im kinda sideeyeing your doctor.  Why are they letting you get USs all willy nilly?  There is nothing to freak out about.  The "baby" is the size of a poppy seed.  There is nothing to see at this point.  Try to relax.  Get some pregnancy books.  The more you educate yourself the less you'll ekk out over things.

  • It is completely normal for an ultrasound to only pick up an empty sac at 5 weeks. I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks 6 days and all they found was an empty sac. My dr said come back in 7-10 days, 10 days later at 7 weeks 2 days I had another ultrasound and they found the baby and I heard the heartbeat. Don't get too discouraged, those 10 days were so nerve wracking for me I almost drove myself crazy with worry but everything turned out ok. Good luck!
  • well the reaction from the doctor had me thrown off a bit plus its my first pregnancy but thanks you're awsome  :))

She is awesome, actually. No need to get defensive.
  • So your doctor gave you an ultrasound at 5 weeks because you asked for one?   Thats not really how the medical profession is supposed to work.

Seems like asking for trouble, since the reason ultrasounds aren't typically done that early is because something like 80% of the time, its too early to see anything.

Does this prevent you from educating yourself on pregnancy somehow? My first pregnancy was a surprise. My first thought, after "Oh my god I'm pregnant!" was "I need a book on pregnancy because I don't know what's going on in there!"
This. I wanted to read all the things.
Same.  The pee stick hadn't dried and I was at the library checking out all the things.
  • Educated or not, if you should be 6-7 weeks as per your last period and there is only a sac and you are told you measure 5 weeks, you freak out. Fortunately, we saw a fetal pole and heartbeat when I went back 2 weeks later.

  • I had an US done At 5 wks 2 days and it was the same thing for me. Had my US done today at 9 weeks 1 day and I have a healthy little peanut in there! Have they checked your HCG level? Cuz if everything is progressing normally, your levels should double every couple days
  • In my case, I can assure you that the last time I had sex (and I know because I got a yeast infection after that put me out of commission until my BFP, lovely!) does not jive with conception date.

Sept.10, last time I had sex
Oct. 22 US: 7wks 2 days pregnant as per ultrasound. Where the hell are my extra 5-7 days?

    What a medical mystery!

  • This is VERY common at this point in pregnancy. Give it 2 weeks and then you should have answers one way or the other. CONGRATS on your first pregnancy!!!  I highly recommend reading "Belly Laughs", its very funny (a bit vulgar at times though) and tells you all of the stuff that other preggo books skip out on. This book should ONLY be a supplement though....it definately doesn't cover the basic.

Thanks for the book recommendation got to add it to my list. people are flooding me with books. :)

my doctor is ultra sound happy and there's a tiny spec in the yolk sack, she said theres no cause for concern since we see something progressing, as for levels, it hasn't doubled after four days, just a slow rise. but we are monitering it

    What a medical mystery!
Conception date isn't the day you had sex, it's generally the day you ovulated or the day after because sperm has 24 hours to get to the egg after it's been released before the egg dies off. Also sperm can live inside of you for 3-5 days. So your timing actually isn't unreasonable. You probably ovulated September 14 or 15 and the sperm from the 10th was still in there ready to go.
  • I too have had a US yesterday and found a empty sac at 5/6 weeks BUT what is bothering me is there is another sac, it's full of blood and I have no more information. I'm back in 10 days to find out what is going on but I'm driving myself crazy. They said to expect the worst
  • I went through the same thing. I was told not to worry.

Wait, so you just tell your doctor when you want an ultrasound and s/he gives it to you? That's kind of what I got from "I'll wait till 7 weeks to Check again". Can't bold, I'm mobile

  • yeah basically, i never heard of this but for some reason if i say i was one they give it to me. i went the other day after making an appointment and we were able to see something growing inside the yolk sake but the computer couldnt pick up on it cause it was too small

i think they are u/s happy because they only do pregnancies untill 12 weeks than they will send me to their adjoining medical office

OK If you don't mind me asking you to stop asking for ultrasounds? They're not free.

Apparently many of you are unfamiliar with DMG's....if some one here is in medical billing feel free to step in. DMG= diagnosis medical group. If you come in with a GI bleed, the hospital gets paid ONE set fee, regardless of how much or how little testing they do. and regardless of how long you are there....one day vs five days doesn't change the $ they get. Yes they will bill for 5 days, but the insurance only sends one amount.  This was created YEARS ago to discourage physicians from running tests just to collect a little extra $. Your obgyn gets paid one lump sum for your ENTIRE pregnancy (delivery not included). So if you have 1 in office u/s or 5 in office u/s it doesn't change anything. Going to a different facility for a specialized u/s is a different story but in office....its all the same and doesn't change anything. So NO YOU ARENT paying for the one extra ultrasound she got! If you ladies are so concerned with unnecessary medical expenses look around at all the moms that take their kids to the EMERGENCY room for rashes. Rashes aren't EVER life or limb threatning an yet I can not count the number of times people on government insurance bring their kids in.....why? Because it's "free" for them and WE eat that cost. Same goes for moms failing to refill their childs asthma prescription until Saturday when the pediatricians office is closed and then they come in to the ER. The list of unecessary ER visits is a long one.....feel free to educate your fellow mama's about not using their local ER as a primary care physician and THAT will make a bigger difference in your taxes and what you pay.

  • I had no sack when I went in at five weeks and then the next week there was a sack and the next I had a really strong heartbeat. You're DOC could be off unless you are temping everyday and know exactly when you ovulated. Don't stress out about it too much. As long as you HCG levels are climbing you're good.

Are you new here or something? You must be, otherwise you'd have seen how many times we tell women NOT to go to the ER for a little 1st Tri bleeding unless directed by their OB.
I NEVER mentioned HER going to the ER for bleeding. Its obvious you didn't read what I wrote. I stated that if people were so concerned with medical expenses that should TELL THEIR FRIENDS TO QUIT BRINGING THEIR KIDS TO THE ER FOR RASHES and other totally unnecessary visits. The point being, if you're so concerned with medical costs that we are paying for other peoples services (via taxes and higher medical premiums)....do a little community education on things that truely cost us $.

This is what I was thinking to. If I told my OB that I wanted an u/s at 5 weeks, whether it's my first pregnancy or my 8th, they would laugh in my face. HCG level seems a lot more reliable than an u/s at that point.

  • Okay so I won't feel bad about not refusing an ultra sound. But I'm not as eager to get them until 16 weeks or until I can see the sex of the baby, because why worry my self? Weirdly the minor bickering here kinda eased my mind about the first trimester. Now I'm off to read about .. Medical billing lol
  • Had bleading and cramping today, I prepared my self for this because I know a 6 week scan should show something.
