Phases we wish would end

DD has recently started yelling "tight!" and whining, squirming, and generally making things difficult every time I have to buckle her into something, like her carseat or high chair.

Can I get some commiseration of toddler frustrations? What's everyone else going through lately?

  • DD wants to go places but hates her car seat. She wants to DRIVE. It's is making me nuts. I usually let her get her jollies in the driver seat before and after we go somewhere and that makes it better but even then I have to talk her through how I have I drive and she can drive when she is older but not now. She just doesn't get it.

Also, kind of not the same thing, but I cannot wait until I have a #2 who is 12-18mo old and DD has someone to dance/play/interact with. It seems like such a long way away now but ohmigish get me there fast.

  • By some miracle L made it to this point without learning the word "no." I was always shocked and thrilled that she didn't use it, but that all changed while I was at the hospital and suddenly that's her favorite. I knew this day would come eventually...

  • "No" is a favorite for DD too. She likes to make a game out of it. Like, I'll ask her if she pooped in her diaper when I can smell it, and she'll say nooooooo..... and run away giggling. Ugh, so frustrating.

  • Nicky has recently become a fan of throwing handfuls of food.  He's usually a fairly tidy eater (too busy chowing down to toss food on the floor), but now he will take a handful of food and hurl it.

We used to all snuggle up on the couch and share a bowl of popcorn on weekends, but no more.  Now he'll grab a bunch and throw it.  DH is a "we don't waste food in this house" kinda guy, so there's a lot of food being picked up off the (clean) floor and then being served again.  On the plus side, my floors are really clean because I wash them several times a day!

  • Mine is stated this very expressive babbling. She clearly trying to tell us SOMETHING, but is lacking all the words. Then ends up throwing her self on the floor, because we don't get it.

  • DS2 has a lot of things going on right now making me nuts -- good thing he is cute!!

Yes to the carseat wrestling matches, still -- this has been going on forever.

He will not stay out of the refrigerator - I know I probably should just bite the bullet and get a fridge lock...but I keep hoping he outgrows it.  DS1 never did this.

His sleep has been $hit lately.  Wakes ups of 4am-5am are the norm right now (before the time change) - this has been going on for about three weeks now.  I've had him to the ped twice during that time, nothing physically wrong with him.  SIGH. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Mine loves to say " I don't like it" and "it doesn't fit" whether it is the carseat, shoes, pants, everything!!
  • We have most recently been swimming in the toddler area at the Y where DD can stand up.  We started swimming lessons in the deep pool on Saturday--pretty much moms hold their kids and sing.  She has done this before, but now does not want to be held, and fights to be let go.  If she gains a bit of ground, she realizes she cannot touch, and grabs--mostly at my neck skin and also at my swimsuit top, which is very ill-fitting due to breastfeeding DS.  It is quite a spectacle--all caught on film by several dads who were videoing the lesson...ug.

    I wish my kid would just sleep for the love of GAWD. This phase has been going on for oh, about twenty months. I'd say it's getting pretty old 8-}
pinesnow - 26 weeks!! Where has the time gone?! Are you getting excited about the new LO?

As for phases, the incessant whining. Of course, my 3.5 year old is still doing it, so I have no real hope it'll be over soon...maybe when they're in their mid-20s??

  • Dd growls at people.
Ds throws everything! He chucked 2 mason jars on my tile floor a few days ago.
  • Two things:

Throwing everything. Food, toys, balls, mega blocks. If he can hold it, he throws it.

The armpit collapse. He did this a lot more when DD was born, but if he wasn't getting his way and I go to pick him up, he would raise his arms so fast and straight, his armpits would completely disappear, along with my hold on him. I had to learn a way to keep a hold of him, which is probably why he doesn't do it as much anymore because it lost it's effectiveness. But when he does do it... Oy.

  • screaming...in my face. Seriously goes from "I'm dying and someone is pulling my fingernails off" to "oh hey mom, i'm good now!" just because she is not getting her way. It is getting old QUICK!
  • Roo thinks it's funny to hit things with his fire truck. He started doing it to our dogs which was quickly corrected an the other day he picked it up and hit his 90 year old great grandma in the head with it. (Grandma is fine) He was in so much trouble! Kid why do you have to be so violent! This isn't even a funny annoying stage and I have no idea where he gets this. Sigh
  • Screaming, screaming, screaming, and more screaming. And I would like to be able to get some sleep. DD has STTN 8 times in 21 months. Oh and the hitting. All can stop anytime now!

  • The violent no. "M do you want your water?" Runs across the room then yells no while trying to hit it out of my hand. Seriously?! Just say no from across the room!

DS wants to drive too...makes me crazy when it is time to get in the car.  The other day we were standing by someone else's parked (locked) parked car and he kept trying to open it.

  • I absolutely hate the I refuse to be put down phase. You know, the screaming while you hold kiddo, so you go put him down and magically, the kid has no bones and he turns into a puddle of goo that is still screaming on the floor.

  • Ooooooh child! I get "I don't like that..." And my new non favorite "stop mommy!"

    Lovely.

Oh and my once awesome eater is getting pickier. I'm not pleased about that.

  • I really wish DS would stop putting his finger in his nose. This has been going on for several months and he knows we don't want him to do it. We've tried redirecting, telling him not to do it and that it's yucky, we've tried having him put his hand elsewhere, all to no avail. He does this frequently throughout the day, often at the end of meals, and if he's tired/bored/nervous, or if he wants attention.

My most recent effort to curb this is to tell him take your finger out of your nose and then I take his wrist gently and hold it for 10-15 seconds which really irritates him. Then I ask him if he wants me to let go, and I tell him okay, but he can't put his finger in his nose. After a few days of this, I'm finally starting to notice a decrease in the behavior.

  • I wish DD would stop undressing herself. She hasn't tried to take her shirt off yet, but she almost never keeps socks on (which I hate when it gets cold), she frequently takes her pants off, she can unsnap her onesies, and I've walked into her room to see that she's taken off her PJ's a couple times. I'm afraid the diaper will be next.

  • *He throws everything (food, toys, balls, books, socks, shoes, etc)  or tries to punch/hit everything (people, cats, dogs)
*The constant screaming. All. The. Time.
    * The lack of wanting to eat breakfast. He used to LOVE to eat everything now it's a struggle to get him to do it. I thought he was going to starve himself yesterday as he refused everything.
*Everything is no. I ask him questions and it is always NO even if it is really yes. Then he gets mad when he really wants something but told me no so I don't do it or give it to him.
*When he throws a fit, he will lay down on the ground and say "Ow" repeatedly. He new thing everything hurts so it's always "ow".

I probably got several others too but can't think of them at the moment.
