this is one of those "it's my own fault shoulda known better" bit I'm interested to hear what others do. Went to lunch at chili's today; DD(2.5) was too hungry, too tired and being really difficult and whiny. Nothing's right, throwing the kids menu on the floor, wouldn't stop stsding up in the booth and putting feet on table etc. Just a pill. she was better once she ate.
Dh tries to threaten consequences (can't go to the park etc) but in this circumstance I feel like it doesn't work and is too 1. Abstract and distant and 2. Too harsh given that she's exhausted and starving. I try to just stay calm and keep her distracted, coloring kids menu, etc but also reach the point where I feel like ok I'm asking for our food to go and we are leaving now.
95% of the time she is really good in restaurants but sometimes it's a nightmare. What do you do?
Re: Behavior restaurants wdyd?
As far as what keeps him busy in restaurants, he really likes flash cards. I bought all kinds of different ones in the target dollar section (numbers, letters, animals), and he likes for you to flip through them.
But honestly, we stopped going out for a year or so because it was too stressful.
We try to make sure our phones/iPad are charged so they can play with them. The crayons/kids menus last all of about 3 minutes.
We ALWAYS order the kids food immediately and make sure the server knows to bring their food out ASAP. We make sure they eat something and then we can let them hang out while we eat.
Going out to eat at a "nice" restaurant is out of the question with them. We stick to family restaurants and chains. It's getting better now, but from about 18 months old until 3-4 was REALLY rough. We didn't go out much and there are places I won't go back to because my kids were so badly behaved I'm too embarrassed to go again.
Our rule is if they are real tired-no dining out. And if we get invited out with friends or family we won't go if it's after 5:30 because by the time dinner is over it'll be 8pm and my kids will have destroyed everything around them and ruined everyone's time.
If we do go out, it's at about 4:45-5. When there are less people to disturb and so they don't eat too late. It usually is other people with young children and the senior citizens!
ETA: didn't realize I hit post earlier before I had finished my response.
